ok then here we go

I have set up an experiment useing 4 bassdrums in a row   , like a tube

I have an 18" kick open ended going on to a 20" kick with no heads going onto a 22" kick with no heads going onto a 24" kick with a beater head & front head with a hole

I've had my hands in the 24" & there's an amasing amount of air coming through & the sound to my ear is nuts

so I was curious to see where people would be inclined to place the mics as with four kick drums in the equation there a lot of options

I have about 4 channels I can dedicate to the kick but all 0.02 currency is welcomed

nobody got any views

I'll maybe even get around to posting a clip or 2 when I've recorded something on the set up, I'm slow like that

No offense but no one would waste their energy in doing this. I dont see the point when a good sound can be accomplished with one bass drum?? just seems really moronic.

moronic that's a bit harsh don't you think

havn't you ever thought hey what the hell why don't I try this?? & see what happens

I can tell you something there's no arguing the sound that it's producing & if it gives me a different/better bassdrum sound then it hasn't been a waste of time to me

I know a good sound can be got from using just one kick, I've been doing it for approx 6 years now I was looking at four bassdrums stacked up in a a corner & thought sod it what if

& then thought how would I mic this baby to record it??, & then thought I wonder if any good natured threadsters have tried similar things & if so how did they do it or if not how would they deal with this set up in a studio if I was a hypothetical customer with a lot of cash

& one last point if you didn't mean to offend mister why did you then put moronic at the end of your post?? I feel offended & my bass drum parade well untruly rained on

you negative minded fcuktard

slidey, thats friggin awesome! sounds like a monster no?

wow, i dont know.

what mics are you using/what do you have availible to use?

i would use atleast one kick mic, like d112 or a beta and put the right at the head of the 18", inside it if you have a hole.

using what i have, i would then put an sm57 in each of the larger toms, probably off to the side, angled into the center, but not in the center, not in the way of the (majority) of the air flow.

if you have a bunch of kick mics, i would use them instead. or 421's, but i dont have any of them. maybe even a condensor with a pad. i have an mk319 and that sound good just about everywhere, but it doesnt have a pad so i've never put it on my kick.

thats sweet bro.

hey, why dont you build and airtight plexiglass case around the bass drums. what does a kick drum sound like in a vacuum? :D :D

well yeah I was think about a D112 in the 18 which is open headed & I've got this EV PL80 which is damn sweet for the 20

a 57 for the 22 & I'm thinking my solidtube with 20db pad for the 24"

having said that I once hung a senny MD43 inside the kick pointing down at the shell about 3-4 inches in front of the beater & it was like hitting glass so I'm toying with the D112 in one of the open drums

oh the choices, the choices

OK here's the mics I have to use

D112
SM57
SM58
Senny Md43
Beyer201
EV PL 80,88 & 95
& the solidtube will probably go about 3-4 feet infront of all the kicks

that sounds pretty mean right there, i would give that shot.

wow what a waste of energy

but a load of fun

yeesh some people have no sense of adventure

how about one of them diy subkick clones. it sounds pretty easy-- get a cheaf woofer, wire an xlr to it and find some way to mount it.

can't you just mic it at the end? it's like a big kick tunnel.. with the blanket and chairs and shit.. only with, bass drums? Also, just a thought what if you did throw a blanket and some chairs over the end of those 4 kicks and make a kick tunnel out of it? Seriously though when you mic it you should throw some sound clips up cuz I (and im sure a lot of other people) want to hear what it sounds like!

how does it sound in the room? cos for sure put up a room mic to capture that, also i'd like to see pics that would look freaking hilarious

I'd Take 2x LD condensers wrap foam around the sides so only the top is showing, place in either direction inside the middle of the of the construction.

4 drums...4 channels...why not try micing each drum at a point. Like 1 mic at the end drum and 1 at the beater as you would normally mic a kick drum, but than stick 2 at the middle connecting points. Might equal one crazy kick sound!

hmmm now that's a good one

I've got 2xLDCs with 10db pads on them

D112 at the beater say 6inches in front of, 2xLDC in the middle & a room LDC

mind you the D112 & the solidtube LDC at the end of the tunnel would be good

damn I like wasting energy

sound clips will happen chaps, as far as photo's go watch this space as I don't have a camera but have freinds who do

GODDAMN boing boing boingity boing :D

I'd dump a big blanket over the whole mess, put the 201 at the beater side head, pointed at the point of impact, probably from the outside. Stick the 112 at the front side of the 18" kick, and throw the PL80 in front of the 24", possibly even a couple feet back. I wouldn't invite any more trouble than that, and I'd probably end up not using the 201 track anyway.

I always get decent kick sounds with my D6 or ATM25 just inside the hole in the front head, so I don't experiment much. There are always bigger fish to fry, like getting young Bonham to hit somewhere near one and three.

sounds like an experiment for people who have the equipment. meaning not me. but still, im going to watch this to hear the sound clips when they come up. btw, just throwing this out there, is it okay to get a bass drum head painted, or will it inhibit the sound much?

Dude! That would look so kick ass!

I really want to see and hear this monster!
