Can anyone explain how they would go about recording a large group of about 18 people in a choir type setting. I have a more than fair amount of recording under my belt, however i never came across a situation like this.

Just so you understand what i have to work with. Here is some of my gear: protools, Presonus digimax 96, mp20, Avalon 737, Focusrite voice master pro, 5-Sure sm57, 2- Audix-f15, 1-A-t 3035, 1-Akg d112

I am willing to make i mic purchase for this session if need be.

Does anyone have expirance in this type of recording as far as mic placement

Any ideas Thanks, new to the site and i love it

Choirs are used to balancing themselves, with the good voices taking the loud parts and the lesser voices filling in the gaps. That means that if you rely on any kind of close mic setup - circle of dynamics, lavaliers, etc - you're almost certain to blow it as far as a mix that satisfies all of them.

I would recommend approaching the project with the attitude that you are taking an audio photograph. Maybe rent a stereo mic and use the AT 3035 to fill in a gap if necessary?

And welcome - we're glad to have you!

It actually depends a lot on the room in which you will be recording and how the group/director wants it to sound. Choirs sound best with space and from a distance.

Buy or rent a pair of R84 Ribbons Mics, set them up in a Blumlein Config... it'll be hard to go wrong with this... your only problem then will be the room.

here's a thread that may help Blumlein and Fig-8
