how would you do this........?

I am to be recording a 7-piece saxaphone band in teh next couple of weeks and I am slightly confused as to how to do it.

I've recorded sax's seperatly loads and loads of times before, but these guys play together, not to a click or drums, etc, that I can record before.

I usually use e604's for brass and woodwind with good results, but I only have two of these, so its not much good. I have a gadget labs Wave 8/24 so I am able to record 8 channels at once.

My list of mics are as follows,

2x Sennheiser e835's
1x Sennheiser e845
2x Sennheiser e603
1x Sennheiser MD421
1x SP B1
2x SM58's

I know I know, thats a hell of a lot of Sennheisers and only one condensor, but I suppose thats the way it is .

Umm, try everything you can...?

Keep what sounds good ditch the rest.

Thats what I would do.

I guess try 3 stereo pairs at different spots in the room (front, above, and slightly behind) and two well placed, high, wide mono mics.

Then figure out what is best in the mix. ?!?!

I meant to put that I have 2x Sennheiser e604's, not 603's. Sorry.

I was thinking along the lines of perhaps micing each of the Sax's with Dynamics, then using the Condenser as an ambience mic.

I did think of perhaps using a couple of stereo pairs, but I have never done this before so thought I'd stick with something I know (to avoid the concept of phase problems really). I also thought that with each Sax individually mic'd, I'd have more control of their levels, then have th Condenser to give that littel bit of edge to the music.

Yeah that suks...havin all those sennheisers....so, try this...get the players to array themselves as they feel the mix between the horns comes to them in a balanced way....by saying this i'm assuming they are all playing live at once...close mic the particular instruments who will have solos in the arrangement....then walk around the ensemble during each song and determine where the 'blend' is....place dynamics there....use your condenser for an ambient as you had planned.Afterwards have several large brown nut ales to relieve the 'too much sax' syndrome...
