DO you guys remember chris? He used to be my neighbor in the residence hall. Anyhow, I recorded him again yesterday and he describe the voice channel as being too "snapshot".

I agreed with him. my voice channel does not add any stupid artifacts, ,but it adds no magic either.

Do you hear this, and how would you make it more sizzly.

preamp: AMR VMP2
converter: lucid ad9624 at 44.1 clocked with genx6
software: logic delta
no compression

BLUEBERRY ON VOICE:

4033 on voice:

I like the Blueberry on his voice. It sounds pretty good the way it is. Maybe an optical compressor is what you have in mind. Second order harmonics.

the blueberry sounded awesome. I might have to hock a kid and get me one.

Oh, I just remembered that I had some eq on the vox, so I guess I should describe.

On the blueberry vox, I used the eq on the vmp2. I had the bass boost(Its fixed at 100hz) at +3. THe highs were left untouched.

on the 4033, I boosted the highs on the vmp2 by about +2 and left the lows untouched. Then I went back in logic and boosted the mids(around 2k) by +2.5 dbs.

"secret" is an awesome song....i actually think it did have kind of a magical sound to it...maybe cause of the reverb etc.

but it sounds great...i dig listening to it. it sounds more "artisitic" and passionate than most stuff i listen to. gonna listen to remembered in a minute.

Okay, I don't know yer old roommate or anything, but that "Secrets" thing...that's great. I love the sound of everything. You probably recorded this in like, 5 minutes, right? Damn, I'd kill for "snapshot" vocals like this. It's perfect. The only thing I'd change has nothing to do with the vocal at all. (I'd verb the git to make it sound like it's in the same room as the vocal...in other words duh-lay).

I just wanted to say..."GREAT."...sheesh, and you're not even trying.

hey Wes480, thanks for the comments. I am going to print out this and let chris read it. It might change his view.

I noticed that the 4033 vox recording is smoother and richer than the blueberry, but it sounds smaller. I wonder if this is the mic or just the level of the voice in the mix.

The reverb was the stock one, a-verb, that comes with logic delta. Since switching from warez logic to logic delta, ,I have not bothered with routing my lxp into logic. I'll do that when I get the legal full version. I like the verb though. Its smoother than many I have used as long as I use small amounts.

ChrisHaris. I dont think you know chris. I posted one of his songs more than a year ago. Then I was using a 414b into a joemeek vc6q into my delta converters, and I did the mix on Alesis monitor Twos(yuck)

We actually recorded both songs in less than an hour. We did not even record a scratch track, ,thats why sometimes his voice is not in time with the guitar. We recorded the guitars first then overdubbed the vocals on top of it.The wierd delay in some spots was because I was pushing the fader while logic was bouncing to disk.
Thanks for the comments man. You got a great YES out of me.

ok im disregarding the ...sonic quality question...as i have "wussy ears"...however ..... I REALLY LIKE THIS SONG.....cool lyrics and voice...and i like the .only a guitar vibe....very cool...

cyan...I think you have plenty of 'sizzle' on the blueberry...as evidenced by all the sibilance that is really exaggerated by the gracious amount of reverb...which is a nice reverb, btw... long delay time..eh?;)

the 4033 is more midrangy and thinner sounding to me. ...but has a more 'mellow' sound to it....to me, at least. It also had a fair amount of 'sizzle' too. I think the sibilance is really starting to push it, and would need to be corrected before a mix. I think it sounds fine...but I would like to hear more oomph in the low end (mind the occasional mic pop). It sounds fairly decent...if not TOO crispy to me.

btw...how do you like the Genx6? Does it make a big diff to you?

Hi mixmkr,

I heard the sibilance too, but since I did not boost the highs on the blueberry and I even boosted the lows I cant explain why its there.

I feel the genx6 add to the realness of the whole thing, but if you ask me, you dont need it. Your recordings already have the sheen that we all strive for.

I listened to your latest piece, and its very nice. That one and sjoko2 latest, and recording engineers were really nice pieces.

funk on!

wow, the blueberry sounds awsome. i guess you get what you pay for in the end? it's very full and has lot's of presence to it as well. i have always liked the 4033 recordings that i've heard from yourself and others but it really sounds thin in comparison to the blueberry. thanks a lot for posting this. i was going to buy myself a 4033 but now i'm gonna have to save a little longer.

btw, i'd like to hear your voice on these songs.

Well the Blueberry does sound great....but I can't afford one. However, the 4033 sounds pretty good too and i can afford one of those so you've made my mind up....I'm getting one.

Erichenry, some points to consider before buying a blueberry.

1. The blueberry is not as smooth as the 4033, as mixmaster mentioned.

2. When tracking, I boosted the bass on the blueberry, but I did not boost the bass on the 4033.

3. The 4033 vox has logic eq on it, and that will make it sound smaller.

4. the 4033 is not as loud in the mix as the blue, so it sounds smaller.

5. the 4033 sounds better with my sytek mpx4a than with my vmp2.

Thanks for the comments. eric and ltbob.

I think you'd be able to bring out a lot more of the natural bass from vocal #1 if you were to cut some lows, and particularly some low-mids, out of the guitar track. I like the natural sound (very cool), and I wouldn't muck with it too much, but those are some bassy-sounding acc. guitar tracks. :D

Funk on, Cyan.

thanks for the clarifications Cyan. i don't think i'd really be able to justify a $1000 microphone purchase anytime soon or in the next ten years anyway.

hey Cyan, you know I know nothing about any of this..

I'll just bump your thread so you can get some more real opinions..

Heya Cyan!

I think they both sound good. I like both songs, but Secret is a great tune IMHO. The other one is decent.

I listened to Secret first, and after hearing the Blueberry, the 4033 sounds dull. As it went on, I could hear that it still sounded good, but I really like the Blueberry sound. Definitely bright, but in a good way, even with the sibilance.

Honestly I think I am starting to believe you people who have talked up the BIG difference in sound between good converters and prosumer soundcard ones. (And I remember your exploration of this when you were shopping around. I didn't buy it back then. :P) That's the big difference I am hearing between this and other stuff. And, it's the same thing I remember hearing in Sjoko's stuff. Seriously, hearing your sound and knowing the sound that I get there is a noticable "something," and I am willing to believe the converters are what that something is.

Damn you. :D
