how to work my compressor

i am having a little trouble trying to figure out how to work my Nady CL5000 compressor/limiter/gate. i am not up to the technical terms that they use in the manual. i use it with my yamaha MD8. can anyone help me?
 
i want to use it running the mic into recorder. i mainly just want to use it to compress vocals.
