M-Audio Audiophile 24/96
M-Audio StudioPro 4
Cakewalk Sonar 5 Producer's Edition

what is the most effective way to set all this up for recording? and why?

right now I have my mic hooked up to my mixer, from my mixer out to my 362, from that to my compressor, to my EQ to my computer (m-audio). I don't know if that's the best way to record... I also have these POS Nady QH-660 headphone monitors

what about my rack equipment? how should I route that? I already knew it had to go from mic, mixer to computer, but I don't know about my rack hardware

Sell it, because with Sonar 5 you don't need most of it anymore. See this article:

All you really need is a way to get microphones and direct sources into the computer, and be able to monitor from the computer. All processing can then be done "in the box" using Sonar 5 and all the goodies the Producer Edition includes.

Many poeple who do Computer recording use Hardware Outboard equipment , Like Me and Many others....For some things you can"t beat Hardware effects as Many Plugins just aren"t up to Par.....

There are a Couple ways you can hook up your Outboard effects....

You can hook them up to your Mixers "Effect send/Return" or through the Channel Inserts...

You can hook it up Like you had it before(Mic-Mixer-Effects-PC) or you can rout the Signal out through your sound Cards outputs into the effects and then back in through the Inputs again but I don"t know if your "Audiophile" has enough Inputs/Outputs to do this.....

Your Mixer has Built in effects that you can also use....

Record your tracks dry and add FX later in new tracks. That way your not stuck with an over-compressed take later or something with reverb that doesn't match anything else.

On stuff that uses delays or chorus/etc that is integral to the part you'll want to record those with the effect in your original takes.

Just my .02.

I like rack stuff. I don't trust software FX and don't want the overhead eating my processing power.
