So after advice from some crew here I will be micing my guitar amp to record my electric. How far from the amp should I put the mic. Oh Yeah it's a Shure 58 mic and a weedy little peavy amp(it's all I got). Any other tips.

Thanks

I think the best thing you could do is just place it in different locations and hear the different sounds for yourself. I think it comes down more to a since of style, but of course you want to keep in mind quality. I'm probably not the best person to ask as I'm still new to home recording myself, but I've discovered that experimenting with mic placement allows you to understand a lot better how touchy mic placement really is and the differents sounds it can make.

Start at about 6" from the speaker at the edge pointing towards the cone. That's usually a good spot for me.

what about when you cant see the cone. do you just guess

I discovered that my cloth grill was just velcroed on when a similar problem arose.

It was ugly anyway...

Flashlight

If the grille cover doesn't detach and you can't see the speaker cone you might try shining a flashlight through the fabric. You should be able to find the cone.
