How to set this up?

Setting up my home studio. I can't figure out how to do this.

I have a Mackie 1604 VLZ3 board. I want to run up to 8 channels of analog out of it (direct channel outs, subs, whatever) to the PC to record (currently using Reaper). Then, for mixdown, I want to run the 8 tracks of audio back out to the Mackie and mix down to 2 tracks, sending that back into the PC (or another PC) for storage.

Is this possible? What type of interface do I need? I see plenty that can handle the input (i.e., Presonus FP10) but I'm having trouble finding something that does the flow back to the mixer.

Or is this a bad idea? Should I just do my mixdown on the PC? Seems a waste of a good console to do that, though...

Thanks.

My two cents...

The preamps on the Mackie will be comparable to the preamps on a Presonus, MOTU, etc. interface. Plus running the tracks back out to the mixer then back into the computer is a couple of more conversions than just mixing in the box. But if you prefer to mix OTB, then use your mixer. Does your mixer have effects or will you be using plug-ins?

I think that by running your signal back out you are increasing the chances of gaining noise and putting your audio through an unnecessary AD conversion. I would rather mix down on the computer, but then again I've never mixed down OTB...
