how to select areas between time measures in son 2

i know hoow to select a partial region on single track, lets say between 49-52 for example rather than selecting the whole track on sonar xl. holding the alt key and selecting, right? But how do I select a region between two time measures without selecting the whole measure, incase i want t edit just a tiny bit of the measure.
Is there a keyboard short cut.
Also I just purchased a M-audio omni studio det up to go with sonar 2xl. I run it through a beringer 2004a mixing board. Im looking to record a whole band and multitracking the individual insstruments at once. Did I pick out the right toold for the job?

Turn off the Snap To Grid (or change the setting to something other than measure, if you want to select specific increments).
