I'm setting up my single use DAW machine with Windows XP. I want the password login screen not to appear when Windows starts up.

I have tried following these instructions:
How To Remove Your Windows XP Password
But could not find the Remove Password link in User Accounts. So I created a password then removed it, as these instructions say. The password dialogue still appears when I start Windows.

Can anyone tell me how to stop this prompt appearing please?

Many thanks

I've just had a thought. Is this anything to do with Service Pack 2 or 3? Because I haven't yet installed these on the DAW computer. What do you think?

Cheers

I've just solved it.

You have to check them ON to turn them OFF.

Completely backwards.

How stupid.

Ah, fuck-a-diddle Doctor-doo.

Now this gets more stupid.

Windows was loading with no password screen until I installed my ATI graphics driver. Now the Welcome Screen is back and I can't get rid of it. If I switch the Welcome Screen off in User Accounts then I get the password screen.

There must be a way to disable this annoying feature because my other computer (also running the same version of XP) does not show any welcome screens or password dialogues at all.

How does this work?

I seem to recall having a similar problem, though it was long ago, so don't remember what I did. I assume I would have Googled the issue to figure out the issue.

Good luck man. I know that would annoy the hell out of me too!

I've found that using wireless makes XP show the login on that machine and I've never found a way to undo it.

I've googled it, tried the easiest answer through my run dialogue and it's just made the problem worse. Now another little box comes up in front of the original annoying little box, telling me there is a problem with my login. So now instead of clicking OK once, I have to click OK to the first annoying little box, TYPE MY NAME into the second ANNOYING little BOX and then click OK.

Oh man, I love this. And I'm sure, Apple Macs were invented for people like me. :laughings:

Hhaha!

There are a couple of ways of doing this. First way is to just delete any user accounts other than the one you use, and set your password as blank. Under those circumstances XP should boot right to the desktop with no password prompt. However if a password policy was somehow set (sounds like your ATI software may have done this for god knows what reason) that can over ride this default.

You can also hack the registry to force it to auto login.

But probably the easiest solution is to download a program called XP Power Tools. This free software was written by some Microsoft programmers and is widely available at shareware sites like CNet's Download.com One of the modules is called "login" and it will let you set the computer to auto-login with any user name and password combo you wish. In short it acts as the nice front end to let you do all sorts of registry hacks without ever having to get your fingers dirty. :)

I just leave the welcome/password screens...and then chose ________________ (nothing) as my password.
That way I just hit ENTER when it comes up and it goes right into the desktop.

Nice one, Whiskey!

In the end, I found this useful. Someone else had the same problem.

Yup, Tweak UI is a good little tool to have on an XP system. I think that's what RWhite was referring to as its considered a windows power tool app.

Cheers! :)
