How to record guitar properly with nice sounds?

Hey!
I started homerecording some months ago...my gear is a UA-25ex, a AKG perception 220, and a pc with Cubase 5.1.
Since now i just used the midi stuff for the instruments (using both cubase midi sounds and Komplete 7 sounds).

Now i'd like to start recording some electric guitar with a friend, and i'd like some advices :D
i made some experiment, and i know this: i connect the guitar to my audio interface using a Jack cable, so that i have the clean sound of the guitar. then i apply some effects to the guitar track, for example using Guitar Rig...in this way i can have a lot of sounds.
there are some other good sounds effect for guitar?

then i'd like to understand if it's possibile to use the sounds from the ampli into cubase.

my friend has this gear:
ampli: line 6 spider valve 112
pedal: line 6 fbv express mkii

how can i do that?

Basic answers: to record the amp, set up the mic accordingly for best results. You could also take the lineout signal from the amp to your interface.
For better DI guitar, get some software, like Line 6 POD Farm, for example.

i guess the esiest solution is to record with the guitar plugged in my audio usb interface, selection the sound with the "insert" function in cubase.
I read pod farm it's good, but i don't understand it quite well...can i use it in the same way i use Guitar Rig? i just have to install it, and put the VST folder in the plugin folder of cubase? i say so because it seems to me that i've to connect the guitar with a Line 6 thing :S

(btw today i used some guitar rig sound, and it went quite smooth, but i think pod farm has a more various choice ;))
 
I don't know if you need a Line 6 interface to use POD Farm or not, but I've got a Toneport GX going cheap on Ebay right now!
 
oh i see ;) does exist another program like guitar rig, but with more amps? :)
 
I'm not sure what sound you want. It seems like you might be most happy with a direct input and software effects. If your style is clean or fairly soft then that will probably give good results. If you want a wilder or hotter sound it is probably easiest to get the sound you want through an amp and then mic it (and much easier to perform).

My personal experience is that software for guitars is not very good for a nice distorted tone. Distortion is usually the first effect you want in guitar chain, so you can always record the distorted guitar amp as dry as you can (mic close to the speaker) and then add other effects with software.

It is pretty common to split the guitar with a DI box to record both the direct input and run an amp at the same time... and then play with and blend the direct take or just keep it for reference or re-amping.

sorry if i didn't explain myself clearly...my songs are Metal (progressive/power mostly)...so well, i search a distorted sounds for the riffs, anotherone for the solos, and a clean one ;)
In these days i was thinking: how the bands record the guitar track? cause i don't think they use software for the sounds lol since the live sound it's the same as the one in the cd...so i guess they mic the amp (or maybe do the thing u described last).

I don't know if know Symphony X or Evergrey, but we're searching a guitar sound like theirs...my friend as a line 6 spider valve 112, and it has quite good sounds...so the next time i'll try to mic the amp!!!
i can also try the 2nd option, but i don't quite understand it lol should i mic the amp and connect it to my audio interface? :)
