I'm trying to record a guitar preamp into a Digidesign 003 interface through the line-in, using impulse response cabinet and poweramp simulations. It sounds decent, but even with the preamp level turned to 10 and the track volume at max, it's not loud enough. It's usable, but I feel I should have more control over the track volume. I've attempted recording through the 003's preamp DI, which gets louder, but adds too much distortion. How should I be doing this?

You may have to use an outboard compressor to run your guitar through before it sees the 003.

That's what I would try but there are so many other things to do.

But if your going into the di of the 003 and it's distorting add a pad to that in the daw.

Sorry, I'm a beginner with all this, but what's a "pad"? How much should an outboard compressor cost?
