 hey everyone, i've been in to home recording for a while now, but i've never quite understood how to record 8 tracks simultaneously on my computer. I need this because i want to record every drum on the drum kit induvidually (such as snare, toms, kick etc....). I am using Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and I am running it on the Windows Milleum Edition operating system. Can someone please tell me what kind of equipment and soundcard i would need, and how i would go about doing this? thanx.

since most of these recording systems have 1/4 inputs, what would be the best way of using standard XLR mic cables with them?

Motu 896 has eight XLR inputs, otherwise, you'll have to get some sort of preamp setup.

The setup I have running right now is a Delta 1010LT and a Yamaha MG16/4 mixer. I run a snake from the Delta to the Yamaha and then the other 2 channels on the Delta are preamps. It's been working well for me thus far. It would probably cost you around 600 bucks for that setup.
