Hi:

Problem: Can’t receive music from my Casio WK-1630 keyboard to my PC using Microsoft XP.

Sending audio midi file from my keyboard to PC successfully, according to my manual. Problem is on computer receiving end. I don't know what to do next.

Audio software: Acid 4.0 and Soundforge 1.1

Instructions in both have no reference to how to receive midi files. I tried using the new MS Player 10 (with new recorder capabilities), and the standard MS Recorder. I just can't find any reference on how to receive keyboard or other device input and save it as a file. If I can get to that point, I know how to use the software.

Note: Device manager did show a midi device until I upgrade my operating system from MS 2000 to MS XP. Now it's gone. DXDIG (XP diagnostics) say my midi device is connected and working but I don't know how to access it.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Kindest regards,
Maverick

Don't mean to be insulting but you do mean Midi data and not audio data? (In part I ask because I am not sure why you would generally want to send midi data to SF as it is primarily an audio editing program)

To send midi data to Acid, go to options, midi and select your midi source (check the box next to the midi source you want to use). Make sure your midi channels are set to match on both Acid and your keyboard. Set Acid to record and start playing.... they should work.

As an aside.... how do you know you are sending midi data successfully? There are programs.... like MidiOx (a freebie, do a web search) that can let you know that.... otherwise, if it isn't showing up in Acid... how do you know?

Go luck, hopefully this will help, or we can get it straightened out in the near future.

Thanks RJT

Thanks RJT

I think you may have solved my problem. I couldn't find any references to midi in the help or index files in Acid. Also, I just found out I need a midi sequencer or software that includes it. I had no idea that a sequencer was required. I'm use to recording in a professional studio with analog and digital (ProTools). I've never recorded on a home computer with midi and didn't understand it.

My keyboard would state it was SENDING the file to my computer. So I assume it was. It was simple to upload the audio to my computer. ANyway, I'm going to find the software you just mentioned that will allow me to verify I am in fact sending. I really appreciate your help.

rjt - forgot to mention

You asked me if I was uploading the midi data or the music. The answer is Music Data. I was errouniously using these terms to mean the same thing. I really am ignorant of midi, though I'm learning fast thans to fine people in this group.

RJT - A question about your instructions

To send midi data (means Keyboard Music?) to Acid,

1. go to options midi (I assume you mean inside the Acid program. I couldn't find this. I did find options but no media link on the pop-down menu)

2. select your midi source (check the box next to the midi source you want to use). - Couldn't get this far.

Make sure your midi channels are set to match on both Acid and your keyboard. Set Acid to record and start playing.... they should work.

To start to understand midi, try this link:

http://www.cakewalk.com/tips/desktop.asp

In Acid Pro, if you go to Options/preferences....there is a tab called midi.... if you click that tab, your midi ports should be available to check off (in order to activate them from within the program)

After you have a midi track in acid, look somewhere on the track for input.... it will allow you to select a specific channel... make sure your keyboard is sending on that channel. It will be a little clearer after you look at the link above.

Good luck.... Have fun!

rjt - Thanks again

I gave up at 4:00 am to get some sleep. Back on it again. My Acid 4.0 has no midi tab under Options-preferences. In fact, I've traced every tab through every menu and even the help files with no reference to midi anywhere in the program.

I downloaded Anvil studio and can get it to send files to my Casio keyboard, but it's doesn't seem to be receiving any signal from my keyboard. I'm starting to worry I may have a keyboard problem with the midi out port. I've followed ALL the instructions in the Anvil program, so far no luck.

I did download Midi-Ox. Haven't figured it out yet, but hopefully, it will let me know where I stand with the keyboard problem. Leaving for work, so I'll have to work on it later tonight.
Thanks,
Maverick

Well it is good that you can send info.... that's a start. The way I track stuff down is to vary one parameter at a time.... see if that's it, then (unless I have a good...very good.... reason not to) I set the parameter back to where it was and vary a different parameter. Check one thing at a time. See if you can narrow down the problem. Can you send.... can you hear audio.... etc. When you are setting up a system, it can be a pain to track stuff down.

I am talking about Acid Pro.... unfortunately, I am not familiar with all of the incarnations of Acid... they may be an Acid4 which is not Acid Pro.... the tab I discussed is on mine.... do you have Acid pro?

Midi Ox will read your midi port and essentially tell you if it is receiving anything. Another way to test your midi keyboard is to hook it up to another piece of midi gear.... like another synth and see if it functions as a controller. If it does, then it is sending midi.... so keep checking one thing at a time!

It is a long and occasionally (alright frequently) a    process, but when it works :p :D :)

Good luck!

RJT I'm following your procedure

Thanks, I'm following your suggestions. I appreciated your taking the time again. I believe I'm pretty close to solving the mystery. I've learned a LOT about midi in the las couple of days. I've found some really good articles. Thanks to your help pointing me in the right direction, and a good amount of research, I'll hope to have this wipped in another day or two.

Maverick

Good news! While forums like this are helpful (saved me a few headaches anyway!!), the best research is you. Sounds like you are doing the right thing by feeding your head with info about audio/midi while you take a hands-on approach to checking your instruments/connections/functions.

Hope it pays off with many great hours of making music.

Take Care
