I've only been messing around in Sonar and haven't even seriously recorded anything, so I might be getting ahead of myself. I'm trying to find out how to make beats like in this video. Search "rift in the clouds" on Youtube and it should be the first one (GGI OST). I can't post links yet. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but this was a last-ditch kind of thing.

Is there any way to get that kind of a sound from software or something? I only play guitar and have no MIDI/synth instruments, if that helps.

I would also be interested in learning how to make techno-beats. Some of my favorite bands/side projects use them. I like Peter Tatgren's (Hypocrisy) side-project, "Pain," and really like some of Devin Townsend's (Strapping Young Lad) solo stuff.

Some of that "Techno-Metal" is pretty awesome.

Sonar comes with a pretty good sequencer program that's built-in.

Here's an example of making a drum beat:

1.) Insert-> Soft Synths-> Session Drummer 2
2.) Make sure "MIDI Source" and "First Synth Audio Output" are both checked
3.) Click "OK"
4.) Click on your MIDI track in the track view.
5.) Click "Views-> Step Sequencer"

The left side of the window should show each instrument name in the drumkit.
The right side should show a bunch of square buttons.

Each button represents one beat. Left-Click = ON and Right-Click = OFF

You can also add other synths and play them this way.

SONAR also comes with a lot of other synths and looping instruments you can play with too.

Have fun!

EDIT:
One more thing. Your beats you make with the sequencer will show up in the track view. If you want them to repeat, do this:

1.) Right click clip
2.) Click 'Groove-Clip Looping"

Now you should be able to drag the end of the clip as far as you want and it will loop itself.

You're definately gonna need 4 X rather large kick drum sounds per bar.

I like techno in certain situations...... But I'm in Ireland (which is europe..... allegedly).... European(and therefore my only experience of) techno is completely devoid of guitar sounds. Anything vocal would need to be so thoroughly processed as to inspire the following :

Guy who's reuptake has been severely inhibated :"Wow, what the fuck is that noise?"

Guy depraved enough to willingly, publically perform this sick act of undescribable rhythynmc\allty (thats how it's spelled): (With that smug as fuck cocky face on) "Thats a vocal."

You either get it or you dont.

You cant learn techno. It's like a virus.

It's musical aids.

I have lots of friends in the twilight days of techno.... and I for one can tell you..... They all wish they'd never learned aids......where is their tom hanks?

Yeah so basically it's four kick drums per bar and loadsa pills.
