How to hook up a compressor to Firebox

How do I plug an external compressor and any external effects into my firebox? Do I plug it into one of the mix/instrument preamps? Another related question. Do I need balanced cables to connect my Vamp L output into my Firebox line in? If so, would I connect it into the balanced line in on the firebox?. Thanks alot in advance.
 
Mic ---> Compressor ----> Firebox Line in

OR

Turn it down so it doesn't clip then compress in the box.
 
okay so it goes in the line in. But i'm not using a mic. I'm using a Vamp2. So how do I hook it all up?
 
I know, but what inputs does everything go into? into all the line ins?
