It's true. In my limited experience I find that gigs are your credibility.
If you don't have any to list, radio stations etc don't take you very seriously.
I know this is beginning to chang, and there are exceptions, but there's no better way to be known than to be part of a live circuit.
Even if that local circuit doesn't have a massive reach, it's still evidence that you're getting somewhere, if you like.
People take that into account, again, in my limited experience.
Anyone I know who's doing OK, isn't getting gigs because of it; They're doing well because they're going out and getting gigs, if that makes sense.
