If you've already got the music, yes you're looking at a long marketing road ahead of you. The good news - the internet makes it easier than ever to reach a wider audience, and fast! Youtube, facebook, soundcloud, etc.

you could take out the lead parts to your songs and vocals if you have them to create a backing track then perform those parts live?

I've noticed a lot of places around here saying that's a "no no" for their open mic nights. It's only 1 step away from karaoke. A friend uses his looper to record backing tracks for a few songs, but he doesn't use it for everything.
The best bet may be - if you are going to do your songs live - to work out 'unplugged' versions of them, or find yourself a partner or 2 to do live versions. That's what I'm seeking out right now, auditioning someone tonight.
Local Indie-music radio stations don't seem to want to play tracks from people who are not playing gigs in the area.

It's true. In my limited experience I find that gigs are your credibility.
If you don't have any to list, radio stations etc don't take you very seriously.
I know this is beginning to chang, and there are exceptions, but there's no better way to be known than to be part of a live circuit.
Even if that local circuit doesn't have a massive reach, it's still evidence that you're getting somewhere, if you like.
People take that into account, again, in my limited experience.
Anyone I know who's doing OK, isn't getting gigs because of it; They're doing well because they're going out and getting gigs, if that makes sense.

I performed that way for a nightclub at a time when I was between bands. I used to think it was like Karaoke as well. The backing tracks consisted of my own playing and backing vocals. In the absence of a band, it gets you out there, even if it is not the ideal setup. I preferred to give a live guitar solo and some rhythm guitar parts to just singing over the music. I got paid for it and picked up a band so it wasn't all for nothing
Having said that, the essence of rap is doing exactly that; playing someone elses recording and crapping all over it. For some reason they dont consider that karaoke so why not do your own originals that way?
