Hello, I'd like to know how to get this fairly common vocal effect as heard in Fever Ray's "The Wolf" (Sorry, it won't post link)

I think I'm also looking for something similar to the Black Keys. Would you please tell me how to do it in the average DAW and what the effect is called?

Hello Nick. While I'm not familiar with these bands and their are a number of effects on the vocals of both tracks, I believe you are looking for that overdrive effect present on both tracks. There's a pretty harsh EQ (rolling off the highs and lows or bumping up the mid freqs) and that seems to be run through some sort of overdrive. Either a guitar amp emulator, some kind of overdrive effect, or actually driving the input of a preamp (probably tube) to get that gritty break up.

I've been working on a cover for a little while (still very rough with most of the vocals missing) where I tracked the vocal through a telephone mic, ran it through an EQ to make it sound even more "boxy", and then ran that through the sansamp plugin that shipped with my copy of ProTools 8. While, what I was going for and what this is are slightly different beasts, the concept is essentially the same.

The vocal doesn't kick in until about 1:26. The Fever Ray track also took advantage of some cool delays to help give it that "in a room" kind of "boxy" vibe. Really cool track. Thanks for sharing.
