Hi all,

I have collected loads of samples over the years.

Most of them are old and in 16bit/441khz.
Now I see that some mastering engineers ask to deliver your final mix in 24bit/441khz.

I know that saving a 16bit sample as 24bit sample does not do the trick.

What is the best way to make my 16bit samples 24bit?

In your preferences you can try changing the project to 24bit, the daw might automatically resample the audio (this could negatively affect playback speed). But there won't be any increase in quality so why not just send the mastering engineer 16bit? They might ask for 24bit but I'm sure they can still work with it.

There is a way to "upsample" anything. Even if you convert it or save it as 24-bit it will still contain the quality of 16 bit. It's like trying to convert a MP3 file to WAV. You can save it as WAV but it will sound the same as the MP3 file. I would just follow jlewis's suggestion and send the mastering engineer the 16bit samples. I am sure they would be able to work with it and understand the situation.

Thank you all for your help. It's highly appreciated.

So to sum things up. If you want to have the "best" end result in your song after mastering try to avoid 16bit samples as much as you can from your sample database?

No, the bit depth of the sample inside your project is irrelevant.
However good it sounds is how it will sound.

The mastering engineer wants you to export your >final .wav file< to 24bit.
That's so any tweaks he makes will have the highest possible quality.

Which means you can leave the samples as they are. Use them in your project freely.

When you render the final mix, render to the specs that the ME wants.
