When I go to my mates studio - he can record my drumming in parts, like - verse, then when we have that down hell play me in from a few bars back and i come into the chorus -

My understanding of cubase 5 is this, If I record a drum track and then try record right next to it it will sound cut off -

but my friend can make it sound seamless - how is this done????

many thanks

He's probably using a pre-roll function. It starts playback a set amount of time before the recording starts.

but he will make one sound play over another - like the crashes and kick will blend in with each other - :(

whats this pre roll thingy and how do you do it?

Could he be using a crossfade? one clip fades out as the other fades in?

Crossfades are your friend here. :)

'CTRL' left click event on either side of joining to select them. hit 'X' to insert crossfade. You can then zoom in and move the crossfade or double click above the fade to adjust the type of fade.

He is most likely crossfadeing your drums as close to the transient as possible (and having the crossfades a little longer than normal).

You have to be somewhat tight though otherwise it doesn't work.

So you're talking about mixdown rather than tracking? Yeah, crossfade.

Naw man your right, he probably was using the pre roll function and having him punch in as normal and just cross fadeing the parts.

OP: You can get away with longer crossfades on drums if you have to fudge things a little.

Can Cubase Le 4 do that punch-in pre roll? What menu is it under?
