HI,
My name is Joshua, and my band is going through a phase, as they all do. The problem seems to be that I am in school for a degree in the recording industry, graduating in 1 1/2 years, and what I'm learning seems to be very frustrating to my bandmates, who don't agree with what I'm being tought. The school is well known and respected by the industry, but it is also tearing my reality of bands apart. These are my brothers, my family, or at least it feels like it. When we record music now we seem to always end up disagreeing on techniques, such as riding faders during tracking.
The band has all but quit practicing. We all are very fond of each other, yet we feel that crazy vibe when we meet, like brushing it under the carpet. I feel like i should be going completely crazy right now with pride and anguish simultaniously. Does anybody have any suggestions, we are good as a band, but can't seem to see eye to eye. My band mates say "I don't care what you learn in school" and "you have a lot to learn about the music business" at the same time.
Frustrated to the point of.... please reply

Tell them that there is no right or wrong way to do thing in this biz.

I don't care what they taught you in school Wally - shut the hell up!!!!!!!!

you are not helpimg blur bear. this IS a mid life crisis.

Hmmm - if you're that dry and serious I can see where there is a communication problem then!

Seriously - what's the issue - do other band members have significant recording industry knowledge that conflicts with your education? Or is it sour grapes? Someone basically has to take charge and make final decisions on certain things, and it usually falls on the most experienced band member for the given situation.

Everyone can give an opinion, but there still has to be someone that has final say.

For example, my own band situation is fairly democratic, anyone can voice their opinion, and anyone can add experiment with tracks as long as there's space, but in the end, in times of disension, I take the role of producer when it comes to recording-related decisions. IN other situations, another member may have more experience and we'd defer to them.... it's all about respecting each other's abilities - more than that though - trusting each other's abilities. Why don't the band mates get together for a beer and chat about the dynamics and try to get any issues on the table.

There -- is that better than my previous post??? ;)

as with a lot of front men, i hope, he always falls back on zen, and turns everything around so that it seems as if i were a criminal. i am willing to work with him because he is a good vocalist, but he treats me like a disease. when i try to help him achieve his SOLO goals he pushes me away as if i were a burden. i guesss, and feel as ifr i should move on. but i still have a connection w/ him. and i want to graduate w/ honors. gung ho is my prob, in his eyes. reply

Well, when I've had to deal with talent's ego, if it gets too bad I'll let them do it their way (hey, it's their studio time after all, and they're footing the bill!!!) If it works the way they want it to, then great - whatever the client wants.... hasn't happened that way ever though. Usually the (poor!) results are self-evident that the talent becomes somewhat sheepish and suggests "to be fair, we can also try it your way..."

I didn't have to say a word - I let the tracks speak for themselves.

But hey - sometimes people just plain suck - they may be talented, but their personalities still suck....... you kinda just have to decide if it's worth the hassle to ya to continue the relationship, or talk it thru to work it out... or go separate ways.

The key to dealing with people is communication - you need to say your piece and be honest - if someone's pissing you off - tell 'em! The only to deal with something is to get it out in the open and talk about it!

i'm definately not looking for simpathy here, i just want to understand. but i'm lost, too early, in politics

A little history. Bruce and I, in the past have had words about some things. I belive he comes from the school of hard knocks, and I come from an actually school. We (or at least I) have put egos a side to do speak openly about experiences we have had. So the moral to this story is to love thy self and love thy fellow man in the most heterosexual way possible!

Hey Joshua........
Wally knows I'm kidding around with him....

Hey Wally - at least I hope you do -- I did use smilies!!!! ;)

That's it!! Now it all falls into place! The guy that sang with my first band really kept us together, kept our rehearsels from getting too serious and tense, got along with everyone of us... When he started travelling around the world, just going places, getting a job, then moving on again, we just fell apart.
When the dude came back after a year, it turned out he was gay... There you have your solution... Now which guys of the other bands I know would be gay?!?

:D

SHUSH WALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(you're not supposed to tell!!!) ;)
