How to create a sense of distance?

I've got some close mic'd tracs (solo voice and acoustic guitar) and I need to create the illusion that they are not so close. I've fiddled with eq and reverb settings, but I'm not getting near what I'm after.

The tracks sound great, but right now they sound like the singer is in bed with you. Kind of like old Barry White cuts. Not what I want. I want to make him sound like a cabaret act. Small-room-intimate, but not two inches from your ear.

I'm working in Sonar 4 Producer, with a cartload of DX and VST effects. Re-recording is not an option this time around.

I have used a compressor plugin from http://www.x-buz.com/BuzCompFree.html that works pretty well for me at changing the way the mix sounds. I used the GranComp 3, and was able to make things sit better in the mix, not sound as in your face.

Hey, Pdadda, that verb sounds pretty good. I was able to come close to the live effect I wanted with one of the presets. I'll just have to do a bit of tweaking. Thanks a million.

well, reverb and volume are your two best ways...long decay...another method is to pan fairly hard to one side or the other with a lot of reverb. This is for the lead vocals right? why would you want them to sound like they're way in the distance?

One thing I've heard that's actually pretty cool with just vocals and guitar is to take the guitar and pan it fairly hard...maybe at 9:00, and pan the vocal at 3:00. just a thought.
