I USE ADOBE AUDITON CS6
I want to pan my vocals. But I can't seem to pan the mono vocals.
Mono tracks do not have a pan option.
Even if i put the mono recording in a stereo track and pan that, its not working.
Even if i convert the mono recording to a stereo one (using the effect preset already present in audition), it still wont pan.

Moved this to the Adobe Audition Forum for ya. :)

I'm sure there is a way to pan your vocals. Someone here will surely help out.

Actually, you have it a bit backwards. You can pan mono tracks but not stereo ones (since, with a stereo recording, Audition assumes the stereo image is fixed).

A couple things to make sure of:

-Panning only works in multitrack view.
-The output for your multitrack session has to be set to stereo

Once you're in multitrack with a stereo output, there are several ways you can pan your track:

-You can use the pan control in the header at the left end of each track in multitrack
-You can use the pan control on the mixer view
-You can use the pan envelope control on the track itself in MT view--useful if you want to programme in a move as part of the mix.

Hope this helps.

Yes this definitely helped. I changed the output on the track to a 'stereo something' from 'master' and the panning was working again.
So here's another question- will i have to change the output on every individual track that i want to pan? will this affect the mix in any adverse way? because the output on the other tracks will be set to 'master'....

Normally, rather than have to go through and change individual tracks, you'd just set up for a stereo master when you create the session--easy peasy!

It's just because you obviously ended up with a mono master by accident, making panning pointless.

yes that would seem obvious but my microphone records mono. so my session has to be mono. so....?

There seems to be another problem now. When I change the output on one track to master. It somehow affects the other tracks too...... x_x

Not a problem.

When you hit "New Session" the screen that comes up allows you to name the session, select sample rate/bit depth, etc. and also select your Master as Mono, Stereo or 5.1. You can select any of these without affecting your layout of individual tracks.

Pretty well all microphones are mono so it's absolutely the norm to have lots of mono tracks and use the pan control to create the soundstage you want on your mixed master. Indeed, the settings I listed above would normally be Audition's default so, at some point, you've accidentally changed something.

so if i select my master as mono, all the tracks will be mono. and mono tracks do NOT have the panning knob.

Where do you have them routed to and where do you want them routed to?

FYI, the norm for a really simple mix is to have everything routed to the Master out. As things get more complicated, the next most common routing is to send some of your tracks to Groups (so you can process/add effects to multiple tracks at once) and then route the groups to the master. For example, you might have a Drum group, a Backing Vocal group and so on--but to be in your final mix eventually everything has to go the the Master, either direct or via a group.

The third example of routing is, if you own a hardware mixer and multitrack sound card, you can send individual tracks to individual outputs.

However, in none of these cases should changing the destination of one track affect change the routing on others unless you have some sort of strange loop created.

Maybe a screen grab showing the appropriate part of the screen so we can see what you have set up?

Failing that, unless you've gone too far down this mix, maybe start from scratch with the New/Session menu?

Finally, if you work on a lot of similar projects, don't forget that you can can create a new session then same it as a session template before you add any files--including your pre-selected routings and stereo/mono designations for tracks.

here you can see -

the master is set to default stereo output.

and TRACK 7 (the track I want to pan) has been set to the RIGHT channel of the stereo output.
--------

with these setting i'm getting the effect that i want. i just hope it stays the same while mixing the session.

--------

the problem is that those panning knobs are NOT working at all. Nor is that blue line (envelop?) working.

Yeah.

From your photo (very useful) it seems you've routed Track 7 directly to one of the outputs on your audio interface rather than to the mixer master in Audition. For that reason it WOULD affect everything else since you can only have one thing going directly to an interface channel.

I'll try and fire up my system and get you a screen shot of the selection you should be making but it might not be until tomorrow my time (I'm in Australia).

Anyhow, what it SHOULD say where you have (01M) Speakers and Headphones is simply "Master".

The very bottom track on your screen when you scroll down should be your master track and that one can be routed to your interface--or you can also do this on the master fader of the mixer screen.

THE ONLY WAY IT POSSIBLE FOR ME PAN THE TRACK IS BY SETTING THE OUTPUT TO IT AS (01M) Speakers and Headphones OR (02M) Speakers and Headphones.
NOTHING ELSE SEEMS TO WORK! (even this doesn't work after i export the session)

That screen shot of the preferred setting would be very helpful. I will wait.

Also I do not use an audio interface.

Believe me, it DOES work--you've just got your settings in a twist somehow.

And, yes, you use an audio interface. In your case it's just the one built into your computer rather than an external device.

Anyhow, I'll see what I can do for you in the morning. In the meantime, what you want is to see the word "Master" in the output panel for EVERY track you're using and only have that interface routing in the Master track itself. If you can fiddle your way into getting this setup you should be okay.

i did that. every track had 'master' as the output.
and the master was set to the default stereo output. (which is the speakers and headphones, i think)

but I CANNOT PAN. The knobs don't work. How do I pan if the knobs don't work??

I think I need to re-install Audition. There is a bug or something.

the session settings i used.

all the tracks have been set to master.

Sorry to but in, but in the 'New Multitrack Session' window, it seems you would need to select stereo from the bottom drop down menu. :)
