how to choose soundcard??

can someone tell me the difference between analog i/o?? digital i/o?? which type of sound card should i use?? i really get confused by it even though i have been reading computer music magazine. i 'm basically using it for recording for my classical and electric guitar songs which i play. currently using 200mhz, 64mb ram, have a dean markley guitar amp. Can i know which softwares are available for download which they have the ability to write scores program??

hi SPINSTERWUN ,
any good sites where i can have a good tutorial on sound cards , whereby i can read out more on their technical terms. which means i can understand more on their input and outputs??
