How to Bypass Faders on Mixer

I have a Soundcraft Rac Pac mixer with both Direct Outs and Inserts on each channel. I am trying to hook this up to my Delta 1010LT where the faders on my mixer do not affect the input level going into my soundcard. I have read about using the insert and this will bypass the faders, but I can't get this to work correctly. I have a TRS y cable plugged into my insert, but i can't get a signal to my soundcard-i hear it but no usable signal. I tried a standard y cable with my input to my soundcard and my source signal plugged into the insert, which works-it defeats the fader controls, but than the gain on the mixer doesn't affect the signal going to the soundcard, and I have nothing plugged in my direct out on my mixer. Any ideas?!

Thanks,
Sam

So you're saying the standard Y cable bypasses the faders, but also the preamps?

Yes, the standard Y cable is bypassing the faders and the mixers preamps
