How should I mic a half stack?

Looking for ideas or just general rules. I have to record a punkish rock band on Sunday and the guitarists (2 of 'em) rock out of half stacks, Marshalls, of course.

now, I only have two tracks to devote to both of them--we're just recording demos. I think I'm just going to put a 57 in front of each cab and see what I get, but if anyone has any tips on how to do it right, that's be great.

They play loud and distorted all the time. There are no quiet arpeggios, no sweet-n-soft interludes. All rock.

what should i do?

Wiser heads will say for sure, but a 57 slightly off axis and close to the speaker should be the ticket for what these dudes are aiming for. Certainly not much to screw up with a simple setup like that.

Try listening to all four speakers as well cos some times there will be one that sounds better than the rest! :)

That all depends, if its a Mashall or Ampeg or something like that you should use an AKG or Sennheiser, SM57 or something like that. If its a Crate you should use a radio shack. If its a Kustom, turn the volume down and mic the guitar.;)

if it's a crate, you should just get a new amp. the name says it all.
