How old are my drums?

I need help from anybody experienced with Yamaha Drums.

I just bought a Yamaha Stage Custom kit used. It doesn't have the split lug design of the new Stage Customs, but the connected lug look of the Stage Custom Advantage. The labels on the drums clearly say Stage Custom, with no mention of the Advantage. The snare is wood and matches the rest of the kit.

I'm assuming the differences make these an older model of the Stage Custom, and I'd like to know how old. And how did Stage Customs rank in drumming world at the time these were made?

Aren't the Stage Customs a lacquered kit, and the Accent's wrapped in plastic?

I don't think your set would be too old. If it doesn't say "Advantage" on the label, I don't think it's an advantage. It's probably just a Stage Custom from back when they had the long lugs. It's hard to determine how old this set is, they've been made for a while.

As far as I understand, Stage Customs are one of the better "intermediate" sets. I know I love mine. :D
 
I know it's not an advantage, but the setup looks just like the advantage setup they sell new. laquered, matching wood snare, long lugs, etc.

I was just curious if the date was marked anywhere like on my old Ludwig set.

So far I like them. I still need to get new heads and retune everthing but the initial playing was AWESOME! But then again, I've never had a wood snare, and a large size kit like this so it's a big difference no matter what.
 
Check the serial numbers.

As posted on Yamaha's web site . . . The serial number itself is derived from the date and unit number when the instrument is made. Although not ALL serial numbers are created using this simple ''formula'', most are.

So, the serial number will probably read MMDDYY or MMYY and then the unit no. Letters in the serial no most likely refer to the site at which it was manufactured.

As geet mentioned, they've been making them for a while, but I'd guess its probably early 90's, but its hard to say.

Also, there's are reason they've been around so long. Stage Customs in my opinion are the best low end kit and have been for years. They have always been built well, so don't worry so much about when they were manufactured.
 
If memory serves, the Advantage series first came out in 2002 (maybe 2001) and that simply made a distinct name for the laquer (vs. the wrap).

Prior to 2001/2002 the Stage Custom came as a wrap or a laquer, but there was not a seperate "series" name.
