our lead guitarest is thinking of selling his current guitar and trying something more modern. I told him I would try to find out what he should ask for it and maybe we could put it on ebay..

So here I am:D

He has a 1974 Gibson SG-62 Custom. It has three dual coils. a wammy and a gold tail piece. It has the wide trapazoid shaped inlays. and has had aftermarket high zoot pickups put in. I think I still have the originals. He also has a brand new gibson hard case for it.

He was told by a local music store guitar man (the guy that rewired it) that he could sell it quick for $1100.00. I have my concerns that he will not find another guitar like this for the same price. I of corse warned him he would never find another neck like this in a modern guitar. This thing is as clos to fretless as you can get and still have frets.

But never the less I would like to know what you all think it's worth. If you would be so kind:).

Thanks

F.S.

PS I am sorry if this is off topic...

....so wait are you saying that the frets are bad, they can be replaced, all guitars need that once in a while......WAIT WTF!

WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU WANT SOMETHING "MODERN" WHEN THE WHOLE ENVY OF GUITAR PLAYERS AROUND THE WORLD IS TO HAVE ORIGINALS! My god! I can't even imagine how nice that guitar is to play.

Isn't this sac-religious?

(I am sorry but if you want that EMO NU-Metal or college B.S., that SG will do better than buying something "Modern." What is a modern guitar anyways? A PRS, they are just full of Gibson-Envy, Ibanez, well they are played-out, Schecter, pfffttt please, oh, I know, you could go and buy a peice of shit. I have a nice one right here, its got ALL the trimings, binding so it holds together in one bigger clump........)

I'm just kidding, I don't know what it is worth because I would not even consider selling it. Just re-fret the thing.

What I am saying is that someone is going to regret this in 10 years. Probably sooner.

DON"T SALE!

If he wants some thing more modern, then buy some thing more mordern but keep the SG. After playing the new AXES I am sure he will go back to the SG.

I have a 77 Les Paul that I bought new, and I will never sell it! I may buy something else but don't sell the vintage stuff.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Ditto.

He will almost definitely regret selling the SG. Hopefully he can save some pennies to get a modern guitar and keep his SG. Backups are almost a necessity at gigs.

(Sorry, this wasn't what you were asking, but I have no clue about the price).

I've done it. Sold both a Les Paul -74 Deluxe Sherry Sunburst and a Strat -65.....The Strat had this Hendrix sound. Do I regret it? Guess one time.

I have a Rickenbacker 4001 -74 and a Fender Precision -75. Will never sell them. I would hate it if I was forced to play a "modern" instrument. Have not found any as good as those.

Tell your friend that he will regret it and that the instrument will be worth more and more every year. If the instrument need to be refretted, be sure it's made by a pro.

Why not have him get a new girlfriend instead, that'll cool him off and keep him from making a big mistake.

Yep, just keep the guitar, and save up for a new one if you want to give a modern one a try.

No the frets aren't bad,, It has very looooow frets. But all perfectly smooth with no dents etc. You know like they used to make the in days gone by. He has since had the frets polished making them lower yet.

Any way you can only tell people so much. I will work on him some more to keep it and deal with his issues. I think he is frustrated because he has had the thing totaly rewired with new pickups, pots, etc. and it now is having a shielding problem. It is picking up the headphone amp now. And I mean it really picks it up.

I was thinking of trying to put some shielding on the inside of the access hole and around the wires but, who knows if it will work.

So no takers ay???

well I will hit up harmony central and see what people have been paying.

Thanks guys

The SG Custom..Is the SG version of the Les Paul custom..Also called the "fretless wonder"..The frets are suposed to be low..1100.00 seems a little cheap to me..74 isn't the greatest year{Gibson wasn't doing their best work in the mid 70's}..but still you should be able to get at least 2000.00 for it ..Just a guess

$2000

...sounds like that guitar shop was drueling...must be a nice guitar.

dont sell it

man whatever he does dont let him sell it.
he will never be able to replace this guitar with a new one.
ive played almost all of the new ones and they are mostly all crap.
even prs is going downhill fast, jackson sucks now, ibanez couldnt make a real guitar if there life depended on it. if you have vintage keep vintage becuse if he gets a modern guitar today in 10 years from now it will still be junk and the sg wil quadruple in price.
owning a mid 70s sg is like having money in the bank,
the only way id sell somthing like that is if i lost my house and everything else and needed a place to live.
i play a 1985 san dimas jackson and will never part with it.
i had a all original 1967 strat and that was stolen wrightt outta my car, they broke my window to get in and man all i can say is if he sells this for a so called modern guitar he will never live it down. tell him to realy think this over i dont know how old he is
but if he is reasnable he will understand what its worth. good luck and god bless. tim pate

I was typing a response to this thread when I discovered one of my greyhounds had pissed down the front of my prs. AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

They never do this type of thing!?! And I can't prove wich one did it. So I've been taking it apart for the past hour.. There goes a brand new set of DR's, and it looks like I will have to replace the pots:mad:

I tell you it was all I could do to not pull a Homer Simpson on the suspect... If you want a mug shot just look at my avatar....

Any way I am getting over it now. The wife is walking on egg shells. This should only cost me $100 to $200 dollars as long as the pickups survive. I just get the feeling that over the next couple of years all of the metal finishes will start to go away on me now. It sat on the guitar for a while it looks like. I can already see where it f&#ked up the finish on the tremelo.

I will now be installing baby gates.

The biggest gear mistake I ever made was selling my ES125 because I needed money. Well, you gotta do what you gotta do. But to sell it because he wants something "modern"?! Tell him to mug some old ladies and buy a Parker but keep the SG. If he really has to have something "modern", I've got a brand new SG Supreme with cutting edge Seymour Duncans on it I'll trade for his old, worn out guitar anytime, anywhere.-Richie

FS, you don't need new pots. Just go to Radio Whack and get a can of pot cleaner.

Obviously your dog doesn't dig electric guitar.:D

Ya I have about 3 brands of connection cleaner/TV tuner cleaner. Some pots are really hard to get it into. It also seems to always be a temp. fix. It can also destroy some plastics. I will take a close look at the situation today. Yesterday was crisis managment mode. I did't notice the piss in the dim light until I heard the volume pot making scratchy noises. Thinking to my self... Self, why is the volume contol making scratchy noises???

Maybe because its FULL OF PISS!!!

Oh well.. the dogs still live:D

I am going to really lay into Dan (our guitarist) and tell him he's making a mistake..

Any Ideas on a good way to shield his guitar for RF interferance??

Thanks guys

F.S.

First thing to do w/ RF interference with an axe is way upgrade the guitar cable. Try a Monster keyboard cable. Yeah, choke down the undelievable price. The problem might be in the guitar, but the cable is the antenna. It works for me...Richie

what kind of pickups are they? Are they covered or uncovered humbuckers?

If they are uncovered I have a feeling that is a big part of the problem. A friend of mine had an LP (granted it was an Epi) that just screamed when you stopped playing. I pluged in mine and everything stopped.

Other than that I would just tell his ass to stay on the other side of the room from the amp. Maybe put the bass on one side of the room and the amp on the other and then have Dan and the Bassist play on opposite sides.

Oh ya. Since the guitar allready has after market pickups, tell him to look into some new ones that fit his description of tone. That could make all the difference in the world. If he wants that NU Metal sound he can get some EMG active pickups for that SG and make it Roar. Or get some 59 LP pickups that have a lower output and get a smoother kind of I don't know I am going to stop typing until I have a direction for this to go.

Hmmm? I'll check that out. We did swap between his and my guitar on two different amps & cables which has convinced me it is in his gutar but, you my have a point there. I will try some different cables and see what happens. I also have not tried a ground lift yet, and I think the headphone amp and guitar amps are on the same circuit.

Thanks for the advise!

Ya there uncovered but it's not a feed back problem, and the problem occures when he is the only one running. no matter where he is in the room. If the headphone amp is on then the track bleeds through his guitar pretty loud. My rps doesn't have covered pickups or shielding in the access hole and never a problem. An when I run head phones from the board in the other room there is no problem..

The the one pickup that he had put in at the saddle he calls a FRED?? No Idea what the hell that is but thats what the guitar tech in Portland sold him on when he descibed the sound he wanted. It looks like it has rails instead of poles.
I think he would like a different heck pickup and a coil tap would go a long way... but then you are talking about another rewire like he just had done a couple of years back.

Well It's getting time to reassemble the prs.. Better get it done.

Later and thanks

My very first electric was an SG. I left it in a pawn shop back in the mid 70's and was never able to get it back. I have become quite an athelete kicking myself in the ass ever since.
