For those of you who are recording other peoples stuff how much do you charge them, and what do they get. Do you charger per show if its a live recording or per track. Do you give them a master cd w/ graphics or what?

It is just a crying shame, that for a $100K investment (absolute minimum for a "pro" facility)and 5 - 7 yrs of experience, that $50 - $60/hr is the going rate.
Consider that $100K would probably get you out of med school.
You charge what the market will bear though.

I'm not talking about getting rich. It just seems that for the investment of time and money you have to make, you'd get a little better billing rate is all. Keep in mind too, that if you can book 15 days a month, you're doing pretty darn well. So your actual monthly billing rate is around $25 to $30.

The "world-class" place in town here charges $80 or so an hour.... just to give you the rough scale in this area.......

Yeah.
The "World Class" place here charges $100 an hour.
And for an additional fee, you can lodge at their private resort too.
There's a bunch of $20 an hour studios here.
Most of them don't last long though.
The going rate here's about $55 an hour, you know, for those places that actually have proper facilities.

Home studios like me are averaging $15 an hour in Columbus, OH(and a lot of free mixing)
The one "world class" facility is $250 an hour and most of the regualr studios are $50 (but they suck)
Plus there's a recording school nearby that does free student work and some professors will charge $20 an hour and use the schools equipment afterhours
...I think thats the way to go

In my area (midwest USA) the "home project studios" range from $15-$25 per hour. The "real studios" are in the $40-$60 range. The few "world class" studios are in the $100-$200 range.
I charge between $15-$25 (based on the project) for 8-tracks ADAT with Cakewalk Pro9 for additional D/A and MIDI. I can't really track drums (small room) so I don't tackle many "band projects" but I do have V-Drums, which allows me to do certain band projects.
My "studio" has always been primarily for my projects, but I try to book about 20 hours a month for outside projects
I charge for tracking and for 50%-75% of mix time (I'm willing to "donate" a few hours of my time to get the mix where I think it should be). I do try to charge higher rates for jingles, music on hold and industrial audio/video projects - and accordingly, I tend to be more generous when dealing with songwriter demos.
M. Jones has a very valid point - if we spent all this cash (and time) for Med school or Law school we would get a much better return on investment!!!!

i charge $30/hour to engineer/mix/master a tune. that includes 2 CDs or a CD and a DAT of the finished product.
i charge an additional $30/hour to assist in composing the artist song. in addition, i've recently begun to require a percentage of the song-writer share of the publishing based on how much i contribute.
i can do this because:
1) i have a day job, so if you don't like my rates... bite me!
2) i'd much rather work on my own music, so you've got to make it worth my time to stop doing what i want to do with the 2nd half of my day.
3) i play bass, guitar, keyboard, and do drum programming. its cheaper to pay me than it is to bring in a bunch of musicians.
