How many tracks via S/PDIF?

Well I discovered this week that my Echo Mia card can record 4 tracks simultaneously. (2 analog and 2 via S/PDIF) I did not know this.

My Pre amp only has two channels, so I was wondering...

If I had a preamp with more channels, say 8, and it had a digital out, could I record all 8 at the same time into my Echo Mia card?

No. S/PDIF is only 2 channels digital.
The most you'll get out of your card is four simultaneous mono tracks.

From what I understand of the question, "johnnypraze" is asking if he feeds all 8 tracks of a preamp through a S/PDIF out (on the preamp I assume) into his S/PDIF in on the Echo MIA, will he be able to record all 8 channels at once. I may be misunderstanding the question, but in the scenario above, the answer is "yes". The limitation, as I'm sure most (all) of us know is that the recorded tracks will be a stereo pair. All 8 inputs will be recorded on two tracks and the mix can't be varied, except for those two tracks.

This would work in a live situation if the 8 preamp were part of a mixer and you had the signals mixed as best as you could before going in to the S/PDIF.

I may be misunderstanding the question.

If using S/PDIF, all 8 channels will come across as a single stereo pair. To have them as separate channels, you would need hardware that used an ADAT interface instead of S/PDIF.
