Just looking to see how many of you ar doing it and what equipment you are using. Also, your opinions on the final product. Thinking of trying this out since I have a couple of rack units that I'm not using. Thanks-

22-2

I track to analog 99% of the time... However, I've done a few digital mixes to 1/4" analog tape. The 2-track machine I used was a Tascam 22-2.

There is a definite change in sound once the mix hits the tape. I'd describe it as a deeper/punch/round type sound. When you AB the digital mix to the analog mix you'll hear the diff. However, there is audible tape hiss when you crank the volume in the cans.

22-2 machines are cheap, so if you can pick one up for experimentation purposes, that would be one way to go.

Oh, and another thing... ADDA converters! Some guys would say that proper converters to and from the machine are important... maybe so... I haven't done that cuz I don't have great converters... so I can't say for sure. I'd like to know myself how others are doing it!:)

It's been a while since I recorded or mixed down to analog, but nowdays I do ofen come out of digital to analog in order to use some outboard gear instead of a plug.

I have a question though on just what you mean by "final product". Eventually this stuff has to go to digital as a "final product".

Who says? I release my material solely on cassette tape!

...and open reel, of course, like the Beatles:

I think he meant analogue mixing ;)

I've experimented with it.. Loved having real faders and knobs... there's something more "musical" about mixing on a board.. Unfortunately my lack of outboard gear and only having 5 mono channels on my board is a bit limiting to my mixing... I mix all in the box for now.. until i can afford a nice mixer and some good outboard compressors/gates/reverb units (and eq and and and the wish list goes on and on)

To be a little more precise, how many go from a DAW like Reason or others to an outboard EQ, Comp, Gate, Limiter, etc, then to a mastering component such as an Alesis Masterlink??

One way to go, if you can, is to record in analog, go to digital for visual digital editing, and then back to analog for mixing. Which, inevitably brings us back to 16 bit 44.1 KHz
