When you start working on a piece, original or cover doesn't matter. How many of you just get crazy with it. I'm very amature, maybe 4 or 5 years (who's counting) of playing and I find a song that I just want to play. Today it was Ben Harper Number 3 (the acoustic piece with no vocals). I have a guitar at my office that I play on and off all day while dealing with customer calls then again when I get home the guitar is with me at the computer, the tv, throw it by the bed in case I can't sleep.

Just curious if this is most musicians or if I'm just crazy.

Actually scratch that I already know I'm crazy, I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else is too.

Play it, learn it, make it your own, move on to something else. Or seek professional assistance. I am not a psychiatrist, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once. 4-5 years of playing = you're just getting started.

Ben Harper is best when he STFU and just plays his guitar. Otherwise he bores me to rivers of tears...

The obsession is good. But where are you going with it? Where are the outputs? What have you made?

I've had pieces that I can't play after 2 or 3 days of trying and just have given up and played something a bit easier. I get terribly frustrated when I can't play something, and i've been playing guitar for 7 years now.

I haven't made alot, I have a few pieces I've "written" but nothing ever seems to be complete. They sound great when I throw them out and let my band jam along with them but it's never really a song. The Ben Harper song is one of the ones I wanted to learn when I started playing but it was way too complex. Just thought of it again yesterday and started back and spent the entire day on it pretty much, still can't play it. I was kind of curious if most musical people were like this

No I do not get manic over a tune. I buy the tab and/or I slow it down to halfspeed.

Ever tried to play this one? If not you shoudl give it a go =) if you can pick it up in a day you can drive over and help me haha you'd only have to drive across the entire USA.

Trying to cover someone's finger-picking style can sometimes be impossible as they are constantly varying it. Learn the basic chords, and make it your own.

Whenever I am working on a song, I just plod away at it. Getting anxious or upset or manic doesn't make the process move along any smoother. To the contrary, it just mucks thing up. The old adage, "Patience is a virtue" my sound a bit corny or preachy, but it is true.

I can learn to play most any song that interests me in a day of woodshedding.
Then it takes me a lifetime to "master" it.
;-)
