How many/much guitar effects do you use?

  • I'm a purist, just the sound of the guitar and amp.

gibson s.g. ---> mesa boogie triple rectifier ----->audience. :cool:

Guitar -> Dano EQ -> RAT 2 -> Crybaby wah -> amp.

Among my Digitech rack effects (reverb, flanger, chorus, etc.) I also use a distortion pedal.

...

And then when I'm playing jazz, sometimes I like to use my Roland RK-2 hex pickup with a Roland GR-50 synth unit. :D

Your chain reminded me of my setup when I played in my old band The Fabulous Lounge Punks:

Gibson Les Paul Studio into...

Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive
Boss DS-1 Distortion
MXR Distortion +
Danelectro Daddy-O Overdrive
Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi
Boss DM-3 Delay
Boss TR-2 Tremolo
Boss PH-2 Super Phaser

Crybaby Wah
Danelectro Dan Echo

...into a '74 Fender Twin.

I ran the Twin clean and used different distortions or overdrives for different songs.

Mine's almost as simple -

LP--->Keeley TS808--->Marshall 1974X

Boss ME 50 only.

Lots of effects and still keeps it simple.

I'm surprised by how many people here play with distortion pedals.

I think myself to be in the "I've got a few Pedals and that's it" category. I've got a bunch of junk (pedals, emulators and processors) at my disposal but in the end, I come back to a tuner and an amp with loads of gain built in. I'm all over the map really. With a good selection of pure amp tones and guitars to choose from, I can usually get the sound I'm after without all the extra gizmos. In responding to this thread, I've come to the realization,...I'm a gear slut :( and I need to join some sort of support group.

11 geets
3 bass
4 heads
3 cabs
8 pedals
2 emulators
2 geet preamps
I'm embarrassed...I won't finish the list. But I do think I need a 4th cab to match up with the heads...don't ya think?

I have:

NYC Big Muff (very nice, I use it a lot)
Boss DD-somethingorother delay pedal (not used much, bit too digital for me)
Boss CE-20 Chorus pedal (I use this a bit too much really, clean guitar doesn't sound right to me without a bit of chorus, though I have been using the reverb on my amp a bit more lately)
POD 2.0 (only occasionaly used, IMO there is one usable distortion sound and one or two interesting effects on it like the tremolo and the swell)

I've got too many! More than I could ever use. I've just collected stuff over the years. Sometimes I use several at once, sometimes none. It depends on the sound I am going for on a particular song.

My mainstays are :

1) Fuzzface
2) Line 6 Echo Park (non-noisy one).
3) TC Electronics M300 for reverb, more delay, compressor
Sometimes I use :

Line 6 space Chorus
Danelectro Tremolo

I can't live without delay ... however I do get off on Crazy Horse style jam rock where I will skip all the pedals except the Fuzzface.

my 2 cents

Mine's simple. Not exactly modest, but simple.

Live :

Guit -> Morley Wah -> Triaxis preamp -> G-Major (detune , comp, verb, delay, noise gate ) -> 2:90 -> 4x12 (hey speaker distortion counts! hehe)

Home:

Guit -> Wah -> Boss DS-1 -> Yahmaha DG-1000 preamp -> Rocktron Intellifex (detune, verb , delay ) -> PC

I absolutely refuse to use distortion pedals. Maybe the occasional overdrive pedal to push my amp's preamp a little harder, but I don't want any kind of a digital or solid state device adding distortion to my signal.
