many guitars

I have a couple of acoustics and 1 good electric. I don't think you can ever have to many guitars. My acoustics are a Fender 12 string, an Epiphone AJ 1, a Samick Jumbo. My electric is my baby, its an Epiphone Elitist 61 SG. I love my guitars.

Don't scream at my anti-consumer rant...

Why do we feel the need to have 'stuff' as a society? Why does our consumer market rule our lives? Can you see that the pattern of buying unnessary things to satisfy desire borders close to the definition of Addiction? Why am i posting these questions here...

I have a few guitars - a larivee electric, an alveraz and a guild acoustic - and I love them. If I ever own more, it's always temporary. I have no 'need' for more, and if pressed I'd doubt I 'need' them. I like having them, and if I had the opportunity I'd own more, but I don't feel that I 'need' to have anything. Do you?

I've got a G&L too (a Legacy Tribute)

My G&L is a S500 made in Fullerton CA USA. Have you noticed any differences in the Tribute which is an import, selling at a third of the USA price.

I love the overall performance of the G&L. Would like it better if it were a Hardtail......NO Tremelo (whammy bar) This arm does not fit my playing style at all nor do any other tremelos in todays market. I had an old Gretsch back in the 1950s that used a Bigsby Tailpiece that was just right, but none other types fit my hand right.

Another strange thing I have read is that Leo Fender never played the guitar at all. It states that on the Fender site. How could he know what the hand of a player would be if not a player. He did design some great body styles but the position I find my hand in on Fenders has some of the knobs right in the way of my little finger...........this is true on the G&L. Might be more a fitting instrument if he had played and understood the feel. Guitars are all about feel are they not?

The only time I ever had several guitars was when I played in a cover band and had to trade guitars around all night for different songs and tunings. I pretty much just do my own thing now and I can get every sound I need out of one guitar.
That guitar is my Jackson USA soloist. It is like an extension of my hands or something, I can't stand to play a different guitar. Years ago I used to lust after a USA built Jackson, with a bound ebony fretboard, sharkfin inlays, flamed maple top, and a Floyd Rose trem...My dream guitar basically. It took me years to ever afford one, but now that I have it it still gives me that same giddy feeling every time I pick it up. I don't need nuthin else!

Now amplifiers are a different matter altogether. When I want a drastically different sound for something, I plug into a different amp.

I,ve got a Takamine 12 string;an old Silvertone 6 string;a cheap Raven 6 string;an Onyx Presician clone bass and a 60,s Kent electric which I carved a dragon onto and if I ever figure out how to upload a picture I would show it to you all.[says to many kb.any ideas?]My 10 year old son has a Yamaha acoustic and an Austin electric[solid ash body with all Floyd Rose]The one I always pick up first is the Takamine but 12 strings have their limitations.the second guitar would be the Austin.I would put this guitar against many higher end electrics for playability and tone.I am a definite guitar junkie and would have a hundred if my wife would let me.Every one is different and unique.I truly want an SG.Just bought a set of drums so as me and the kid don,t get bored.Wife loves em!! Any ideas on the pictures let me know,I think all of you will love my Dragon guitar

One can NEVER have too many guitars. Never.

Agreed. Even if you sometimes build your own (like I have, and not from a junky kit, either) there's always that pull for some of the commercial models. I've had a few over the year's and kept my favorites... The top 5 are:

1: American Strat with Roland GK-2
2: Gibson LP Studio
3: 1940's Oliver Classical Accoustic (It was my Grandfather's)
4: Fender Resonator Accoustic
5: not a guitar, per se but: Fender P-Bass

Jason

How many? I don't know, 20 I guess, or one more than I had a month ago.....just got a Gibson J-45 Rosewood.

Now I'm looking at an Eastman archtop on ebay.

It never ends.

Well according to the G&L website, the main difference is that the Tribute series are made using CNC (computerised numerical control) machines, whereas the American ones are, I think, handmade, another thing that I noticed was that in the spare parts section, most of the spares (but not the bridges I think) are listed as not being suitable for Tribute guitars, so presumably they're saving a few $$$ on the hardware too, as far as my guitar goes (the Legacy) they also use different wood for the body. You also get a moulded hardcase instead of a gigbag (which I didn't get anyway - meh) I've seen an American Invader too and it looked like it had a graphite nut on it (mine was crappy plastic)

I love the overall performance of the G&L. I'm not mad keen on the whammy bar either - I ended up blocking it, though they do do quite a few guitars with hardtails.

He did design some great body styles but the position I find my hand in on Fenders has some of the knobs right in the way of my little finger

Yeah, I'm finding that too, the volume pot is a little bit too close to where my hand ends up after I've played a chord.

Of course, the more the merrier. I have five. However, three guitars could get me by for 90% of applications.

1 Fender Strat/Tele
1 Gibson SG/Les Paul
1 Acoustic

Just wondering did you know the part about Leo Fender not playing the guitar at all...........they say that he did not even know how to tune one. Here is what his web site say's about not playing guitar.

Quote from his web address: Ironically Leo Fender never learned to play guitar himself (although he had played saxophone in high school) but he had close ties to the musicians' community in southern California. Therefore he could approach the electric guitar unrestrained by tradition, and bring his own vision of the instrument to the public.

How many guitars do I NEED?...two...one acoustic and one electric.

How many guitars to I WANT...all of them :D

Need? Want? Theyr'e the same thing are'nt they?

Right now just two. Fender Tele and a Taylor710. But I need a classical (any suggestions in the around $500 range would be appreciated) and another steel string acoustic. So that's what I want.

I do have other guitars but they never get played, so I figure I don't really need them. But I still want them. :D

Yea babe...you got that right.

Amen! I've got a small stash of RG's that don't get-round-much-n-e-more but they're like my children...so what if they're ugly...they're still mine!

OMG...did I just say that?! They look like their mother...an angel walking the earth. 'cept for when the red moon comes out. ;)

Oh hell...never mind.

Oh ya, I'm in the can't have too many guitars club.

I figure I only need 3, two electrics and an acoustic.

Currently I have

Washburn N4
PRS Custom 24
Ibanez Jem 777
Ibanez S470
Ibanez JS2000
Ibanez Universe
Charvel Custom
Yamaha Acoustic
Yamaha Acoustic 12 string
Taylor Acoustic
Vintage Strat

There's a couple more I have my eye on as well.. I swap them though, if I kept everyone I ever bought ( and boy I wish I had the money to do that ) I'd probably have close to 30 by now.

That's bizarre if it's true, OK there are some aspects of designing a guitar (like pickups) where you could maybe get away with not being able to play, but how on earth did he test his designs if he couldn't even tune it, unless he was constantly giving his prototypes to guitarists for them to try out.

Hmmm, at the moment I have an ooooold classical guitar (it's got a ton of marks and CRACKS!!!, but still I love how it sounds), a very good classical guitar and a cheap electric. I'm hopefully going to buy a nice PRS now. When I can find some more money, I'd also like to get a nice Les Paul and then maybe something more aggressive. That's all I guess I "need". After that, well, there are always options ;)

Well,

I know a few people who have the guitar collecting sickness. I know a few people who collect guitars just to keep up with the Joneses who have enough guitars to open their own small shop.

I'd say that there were worse ways to spend one's money.

For me, it is about colours on a palette. With the combination of guitars that I listed above, coupled with a few decent mics, a decent tube amp, and fx, my palette would be large enough for what I do. I don't like to 'fight' a guitar to play it. I bought my Yamaha classical off some elderly gentleman who put an advert in the local paper. It isn't a higher end model (I paid $160.00 CAD) for it, and it is a little difficult to play. My Yamaha bass is noisy. Not great for recording. And, because I love the tone of a decent semi-acoustic, I want one of these. I have a decent 12 string (Takemine), one decent 6 string (Taylor 310, at the time of purchase, their cheapest full size model) and 2 decent electrics, one (Strat) for the classic single-coil sound, and one (the Ibanez) for a very decent humbucker sound. I paid $227.00 for that guitar in 1981.

It's all about having the tools to do what I need to do, and to be able to enjoy doing it.

I don't want 50 guitars. Too many strings to change.
