Fancy Rock N' Roll
Just another pointless thread with poll, but I was curious...
How many computer (PC, Mac, Atari, etc...) do you have ? Where (home, studio, office, etc...) ? Why would you need those ? Wanna talk about it... go ahead...

;)

I've got my main 1.2 mhz Atlon based DAW and a 800mhz notebook. Use the notebook for most internet and other general BS. Traded my old PII/400 for a G&L Bass which I think was obviously a good deal because that PC is not worth anything near the Bass! :D

Then my son has a couple computers, so we have 4 networked into a router that's connected to a cable modem for fast net access. To tell ya the truth I don't really like computers that much. Have used them for many years in my day job and really hate the troubleshooting and crap that can come up. But my kids an expert at them so I have my own in house IT department!

Two, my current rig, some kind of athlon, gaming, daw etc... and my old k6III450 in the basement running linux acting as a gateway and hopefully some other things in the near future.

Eventually my main box will be retired to the basement "studio" instead of carrying it down there to record, and I'll have three :)

I have 1 pc. P4 2.2, 1 gig ram, 40gigs (OS and soft), 80gigs (audio), 3 monitors (2 x 19" and 1 x 15" LCD).

I always run my pc with 2 OS, one for web, gaming, and my own music projects. And a second XP for the studio.

Jeez, I must be some kinda nerd. Let's see... 6 running PC's and a slew of parts.

1. DAW - 1.8 ghz AMD, 640MB ram, 30gig, 30gig, 80gig, 80gig, 19", 17" Win2K

2. Internet - 800mhz PIII, 256mb, 30gig, 17" WinXP

3. Work-from-home - 1.4 ghz AMD, 512mb, 320gig RAID, 40gig, 19", 17", 15" WinXP

4. Kids - 500mhz PII, 128mb, 20gig, 15" Win98

5. FTP server - Same as #4 Win2K Server

6. Router - I don't even remember anymore Win2K Pro

#6 is a computer based version of your typical internet router, except it allows for much more flexibility in port fowarding. Used primarily as a gateway to VPN into work.

3 to go

I have a P-200 that is our main WP, accounting, etc. Never goes on line, never gets any program loaded on to it, works for our small biz like a champ.

An AMD475 with 160mb mem. for the internet, games, etc.

And mine, a P3 650 that I am building for my home studio. I know, slow, and with a SB 512 card to boot, but it's better than nothing, and far ahead of my yamaha MT-50!

What can I say, a shoe string budget!

Duron 1200, 192MB RAM, 15GB hard drive for music, programming, internet, basically everything.

PII266, 96MB, 2x 4GB hard drive as linux based file-/web-/ftpserver/gateway to the internet/programming testbed

Eh, well, everyone in the family got one. Except me, I've got two. And then there's the router and the computer in the studio. That's seven. I guess we're not counting retired ones, do we? If we do I've got 'puters from around '80 and onward. Including stuff such as ZX81's and Spectravideos. I'm not going to count them.

I'm not going to count those at work either. I'm a developer and part of my job is managing our development environments. You take a guess how many f-ng computers I work with at the office...

Yes, well, I'm probably as nerdie as they come...
If you don't believe me. My young son is standing besides me bugging me that he wants to play D&D tonight. It's even rubbing off on my family.
:)

The 700 MHz PIII in the studio, a 400 Mhz AMD K6 upstairs, an old Pentium 200 as an internet machine, my 700 MHz Compaq laptop and a couple in pieces laying around.

I mix work and pleasure, but on three computers... ;)

1: dual XP1600+ as main pc running linux. used for sound, word proc, internet, mail
2: dual duron 1300 as test pc running linux/w2k. used for testing linux stuff and running some windoze apps that I have not yet a linux alternative for
3: dual PII running w2k running w2k: backup recording machine for when the linux one is not in shape (I messed up a couple things.....) or as external FX box.
4: via itx mini pc. used a file server for the moment. Is waiting to be used as router.
5: old pentium. running some old dos apps (really) mostly shut down these days.
6: sun sparcstation IPX. looks cool
7: old 386 that I cannot trow away
8: PDP11/73 if I ever have the time to get Music11 running on it.....

Let's see, I've got:
Celeron 466, 128MB RAM 6.4GB HDD for internet & HS2002
Casio fx-85N scientific calculator for solving tricky engineering problems
Er, that's about it really. :)

1. Brand spanking new DAW: AMD Athlon XP2000 with 512 MB 400 mhz DDR memory, ASUS A7V8X mobo and dual 60GB harddrives. This pc is for audio only.

2. My wife's gaming pc: Intel Pent 4 256MB DDR with one 120GB 7200 RPM drive. Used for games and her internet circle of friends.

3. Hewlett Packard piece of crap from 2 or 3 years ago, Pent III, dvd, cd rw, overpriced and inefficent. This pc is for the kids' homework and my internet square of friends.

4. An Adam computer, pre-intel with windows 3.1. Gutted out but still quite healthy. Used as garage furniture.

5. Unknown brandname Pentium I. Floppy inoperable. Has a version of Tetris that no other computer in the house can operate. Used as a space hog.

6. Packard Bell piece of total shit, Pent II, missing the case, components beaten mercilessly with a hammer. Stupidity in a box. CD rom used as a drink holder when working on the car.

7. Somewhere in this house is a Texas Instruments TI994A. Still operable and fully functional if you know how to program with BASIC. Cassette storage medium and can be hooked up to your TV. Our honorary pc that is "MIA"

Okay... so far..

0 = 0 --> somebody must have lied about it :D
1 = 5
2 - 4 = 9
4 ~ = 7

21 users and No Macintosh

Really ?

I have 5 in my home with cable internet on each. 1 in my studio (soon to be 2), 1 main computer, 1 for my 8 year old daughter so she doesn't screw my main puter up, 1 for my 14 year old son built for serious gaming, and one in the garage just for lack of a better place to put one...hehe. That one is good for when I'm out there and need to look up plans or online mans (or porn where the kids can't catch me...hehe). Also I have several stereos linked in the computer network so I can access mp3s from anywhere in the house.

2...One is in a billion pieces, and not technically mine for much longer. I'll be glad to be rid of it...frickin compaq's.

The real beast is an AMD.

ASUS A7N8X mobo
athlon 1800+XP (so far)
512 mb ddr ram (so far)
various other stuff inside.

Sweetass kickass machine as far as I am concerned, and totally upgradeable in the future. No major problems thus far. Runnin XP as well. I only wish I had another so I could have a standalone DAW.

No shit. I heard that. Had 1 for 4 months. Was the reason I started building my own.

My old Mac collection:

Main Mac: 8600 w/G3 400, 576MB RAM, 2 80GB EIDE & 1 18GB SCSI HDD's, 2 CD's, Zip, FW & USB.

Secondary Mac: 7100/80, 136MB, 1GB

Other old Macs: 8500 (formerly my main) Quadra 840AV, Quadra 950, Quadra 700, IIci. All are fully functional. I'm just a liitle short on 50pin SCSI HDD's.:D

Would love to have a Mac, just can't bring myself to spend $4000 on 1 computer.

You must not be looking very hard. I got every one of mine for free.:p

My favorite was this 8600. I got it as a gutted carcass (case, logic board & PS). They told me it wouldn't boot!

BWAAAHAAAHAA!:D :D :D
