A midi port will support up to 16 midi channels.
Each midi channel can support 128 note values (0..127) and 128 velocity values (0..127)

No wonder I was confused. You mention channels in the title of the thread and keys in the text. Which are you talking about?notbradsohner said:

If you mean a number that is like the number of keys on a piano- MIDI supports 128 of those and can be extended by a command that shifts the range up or down an octave at a time.
