Do you have to provide CDs or can you upload mp3s for....

I really am more interested in the distribution for downloadable songs especially from iTunes. Can I do this instead of sending 5 CDs? I cant seem to find an answer to this question on their site. iTunes is the place to be. How can I get there without sending CDs?

From what I can tell, I don't think you can. Their site says you have to be a member (ie: have your CD for sale on their site) in order to participate in the downloading thing.

Yep, that's the deal, you have to have a CD for sale, that's why they are called 'CD' Baby and not MP3 Baby !

Having said that there is nothing to stop you putting together your work in an album form, burning 5 CDRs, slapping a label on them and making up a cover which looks reasonably professional and sending them those, just to get you started. I don't think they insist you have hundreds professionaly replicated or anything, just that you have a decent looking CDr available with some artwork. So get busy!

I have sold 40 CD's and have done well on their digital downloads as well

OK, but over what period? 4 weeks, 4 months, 4 years?

I know this thread is WAY old but I'm still curious abuot other people's numbers!

I'm curious about that myself. For those who have their own domains with shopping carts, which one usually sells more?

ofcourse having your own shop with cart is the coolest...but is it worth the $$$?...and another down thing is that using a credit card is still somewhat irregular over here...

I think it might be depending on how you look at it...of course it also depends on your budget too. I could see someone having one price on cdbaby and then having a lower price on their site for buying it through them directly.

For the four bucks they are taking from you for each CD...you could set up a shopping cart interface on your own website with paypal and sell outta there!

Maybe, but the question then becomes "how do you get the customers to your site?".

There's a reason publishers exist in my mind, and that's because they have channels through which they can market goods. It's also the number one reason it is so difficult to effectively become your own publisher in my opinion.

Damn good point fraser

Here's a note on the Digital Distribution. You can do it and not sell your album on CD Baby. All you have to do is send them two copies. One they keep and digitize/archive. The other you can just sell or buy back yourself. Then you'll be sold out and still have digital distribution.

Easy as that--pretty much from an email from Derek, as many people asked this.

You do have to pay the standard one time CD Baby stocking fee though.
