I go into my System Information and check out 'Running Tasks' and if I'm not online, there are about nine of them running usually.
How many of these are necessary? Aside from the ones that I've decided should be there (like my soundcard), they're all microsoft apps.

Can they safely be made not to run? How?

...

if you are running XP you dont need to have any apps in the background, so it safe to uncheck all those background apps under startup in msconfig,
but...
if you have windows ME/98se you need systray and explorer running

Mmm, I've already disabled systray in the msconfig Startup list.

You sure it needs to be running?

I seem to remember somebody here posting a link to a site that listed all the things that run in the background of Windows, and which ones you can safely disable. Anybody remember that?

And while I'm at it: how come the apps listed in msconfig Startup don't match the apps listed in Microsoft System Information>Running Tasks?

i think the whole tweaking of DAWS is overrated...i'll have norton antivirus and firewall running i'll turn them off there is no difference in performance..YMMV

Hey Dobro,
For optimizing Win98, I read that "ScanRegistry" and "SystemTray" must remain enabled. I printed this article from the old Syntrillium/Cool Edit site. Mind you, the article states, and I quote, "Of course this procedure should be done at your own risk, but as long as it is done properly this will always work, and in most cases vastly improve your PC's performance".
