If only for a moment.....
Is it important for you to become better in your playing and/or singing ? Do you feel the need to practice and for how long ?

I still practice singing and playing drums and bass but haven't played any guitar in about 2 years. I just set up my amp and head and shit this weekend for guitar and jammed for about 1 1/2 hours. Felt pretty odd after all this time on bass but within 15 or 20 minutes, I was pretty much back where I left off.
So I'm thinkin not so much on guitar but the other instruments, yeah....keep practicing.
:)

(morning GrimDude! :D )

Early in life I learned strings, violin, then cello then settled in to viola, made it as far as the youth symphony orchestra. Dropped all that and started messing with guitar. Didnt get to far before life lead me away from music. Fast forward decades. I started on drums very late in life. Im approaching 3 years playing them. I practice just about every day. A minimum would be an hour and some weekend days I accumulate 4 or 5 hours a day.

been playing guitar/sax/bass and singing for ummmmmmmmmmmm ....... holy crap! 50 years!

Been gigging for 48 and still gig as much as 7 nights a week when it's available.

And yes ..... I still practice and try to get better.

I played violin first and practiced all the time, till I quit. Then played sax and practiced sometimes, till I quit. I picked up the guitar somewhere in there and have basically never practiced or been instructed in playing it. I quit playing that too. That was until last year when I picked it back up as a more serious individual. I have been practicing guitar for the first time in my life lately and it's amazing to me how little skill I actually have. I'm excited for where the practicing and dedication is going to take me. While practicing may not be 'fun' it's invigorating to actually feel myself grow.

I was accepted into my school of music and I never realized how much you CAN practice, and how worth it it is.There are so many ways to practice your instrument, exercises, it never ends!

Am right up there with Steve. 50 years playing yet I don't practice hardly at all any more.

I don't have a set practice routine, but I'll set up a click with various meters and tempos and play to that. Unfortunately, the work/mortgage/food on the table thing prevents me from doing it more than a couple of hours a week. I also play on a pillow while I'm in front of the tube to keep my old wrists from setting up like oatmeal in a bowl. And then there's this recording thing...

it just dawned on me that I've been playing guitar for about 35 years, bass for about 30 and drums and keys for about 10 or 12 years.
Holy crap!
Must be getting old.......(mumble mumble...)

I used to try to play for 2 hours a week at home (Tuesday after work) but lately my daughter's need to study makes me have to tone it down.... Luckily my friend and I get together almost every Saturday at his place to write and record so I get a few hours in then. I just play guitar but the odd time I'll fiddle on keys.

Playing Bass for 42 years, still play in a band, practice? Not really LOL. Listen and study whats going on musically, all the time.

I also have played keyboard to some degree for about 30 years but I am crap really because I don't practice it at all, just know the notes and the theory, keyboards is what I should practice.

Alan.

I never "practice" in the sense that I'm trying to become a better guitarist or whatever, generally speaking... I rehearse tunes that I'm writing, or recording, and that may take me on new avenues of exploration re. technique...

And Grim... what's with all the wide ranging questions all of a sudden... you doing a thesis?:D

They just keep popping into my head......like songs !
I guess it's also a way to get some of the newcomers to engage a bit.

Hey, newcomer engaging! Been playing guitar and singing over 30 years and the practice tends to be more working on new songs or refreshing old ones. I took up the piano a year ago and I try and do some practice on that every day, even if it is just 10 or 15 minutes (it all helps). Just passed my grade 1 so I must be doing something right. Just proves that you are never too old to start learning, it just seems to take a lot longer!!

I've been playing drumspercussion for about 45 years (55 if you don't count paying gigs), guitar/bass for about 40 years, keys about 30 years and other various instruments (banjo, pedal steel, etc.) for anywhere from 10-15 years.

I don't pratice drums much (that is my main axe and I get enough gigs to keep my chops up) - but a day does not go by that I don't have some other instrument in my hands trying to compose, record, learn new songs, learn theory or watching instructional videos.

I hope I keep trying to improve until they pry an instrument out of my cold, dead hands!!!!
