im gettin into the whole recording thing but i still dont know, wat makes a mic better than the other ?

specs..frequency response, self noise...SPL handling.....

specifications.....what makes anything better than another...specs..

Whether or not it is a Microtech Gefell...etc. :D :D

Actually, in pro audio, "specs" is probably the one thing that doesn't make one piece of gear better than another. Mackie mixers "spec" better than Neves. You know what Benjamin Disraeli said, don't you? "There are three types of lies: lies, damn lies and equipment specs."
 
By that same train of logic, one could argue that a solid state guitar amp "specs" better than a tube amp.
 
As you may have noticed, there are now about a bajillion mic's in the $100 - $300 range. I don't run a studio, but I'm a home recorder who's gone through the process of buying things, and then trying to "upgrade" mic and pre's etc. I don't see a huge difference in the budget mics, but they each have different personalities (as do the budget pre-amps). The trick is to find stuff that (1) works well together, and (2) suits what you need.

Most of us recording at home don't need well-rounded mic collections - just stuff that works for what we do. And the best equipment for you will almost definitely be different than the best gear for me, or the next person.....
