How important is this?

What is the importance of having a audio interface or mixer with Switchable +4 dBu/-10dBv? Are they used for recording different inputs (ie. line or mic)?

+4 is the standard signal level for Pro gear, -10 is the standard for consumer grade gear, the switchability is to enable you to connect to either.

They're both "line" level. The extra boost on the pro stuff allows longer cable runs.

So, I don't actually need it for my little home studio then. I am assuming by longer cable runs you mean cables longer than 9 feet or so, right?
