I apologize for yet one more monitor-subwoofer question, but I've recently received some dealer contact that raises an obvious question that might interest other members here, too.
I'm about a week away from picking up a sub for my small M-Audio BX5 monitors, and I'm about 75% sure that I'll go with the matching M-Audio SBX sub. But my recent post on this topic brought me several PM dealer responses: one response that (fortunately) offered a price close to $100 off the best online price, and two other responses that offered competetive prices for for the KRK RP-10S sub (200 watts, 10") and the Tannoy TS-8 (200 watts, 8"). The latter two subs also look to be pretty good budget subs.
My question is simple: does anyone have a take on how important the conventional wisdom is to buy a sub from the same company that makes the satellites? Does it really make a difference that might override buying a more powerful/larger sub from a different manufacturer? In my case, should I spend some time finding and trying other monitors in the price range--like those by KRK, Tannoy, and even Samson--or would it be a waste of my time? (It's actually a bit hard to audition these unless I were actually to buy them all and try them in my little studio--a major pain unless it's really necessary.)
Thanks for any further wisdom, my distant mentors.
