I need a really pro card for digital production.
Currently I record analog no 1/4" and makeing demos on the PC using SB Live value card, but thought starting to use digital equipment for production.

Is this card good enough ?

Thanks.

For REALLY pro your going to need to spend about.. err what was that approximate figure that those guys came up with in that other pro studio price debate.. i think 50,000-100,000 US for a really pro sounding studio setup?

The answer is no that is not a pro card. Its a really big step up from the sblive (trust me im using sb live right now). It will give you good results, and depending on your mic/preamp choice, and your knowledge of how to use them. Depending on the source that your recording, and the softwear your recording to, you could get pretty damn good results. The trick is you have to know what your doing, someone could give you 100,000 dollars with of recording equipment and if you didnt' know anything it would be about as usefully as a bucket full of toaster parts.

But yea, assuming your signal chain is all decent and you dont have any really weak points (Ie: sblive, radio shack mic, cables your grandmother knit from wool.. etc..) you can get good results. but they vary!

No, its not pro, but it is a very decent sounding card.....semi-pro would be a better description.....prosumer if you may.....

if you must go with a USB card, this would be a decent option.....myself i hate USB sound cards.....Id look into M-Audio's PCI cards.....what features are you in need of?...

If there is such a thing as a "Pro" sound card, this would be it:

If you don't need that many inputs, and you like the idea of going the USB route, as in the M-Audio Quattro you were looking at, then this would also be a desirable option amongst the professional AE community, so to speak. Keep in mind that, although, it may appear to be expensive, it's actually quite reasonable when you consider it comes with two channels of very high-calibre mic preamps and a peak limiter that is getting a lot of raves:

Can you get good results from the M-audio Quattro? Shure. Is it considered "really pro," :D as per your requirement? Probably not. But certainly a lot closer than the "really pro" guys would care to admit.

gilwe, for another perspective, many folks who have used the m-audio cards consider them adequate for studio use, and praise them for price/performance. if this is your budget range, you could do much worse.

pro is a complicated term. better to just start making music, and bet more of the farm as time goes along. :D

pro = professional = "engaged in by persons receiving financial return"

point is, what you you really want to know? if Epic Records will let you record J Lo using that interface or if you will be able to make a quality CD using that interface that captures the magic of the local punk band?
