How good is the Alesis DM5 Drum Module? I'm looking at getting a pretty good electronic drum set, for around 1000 or so including everything. Any suggestions?
The DM5 is ok - nothing spectacular. There's some good sounds in it, but I've had difficulty getting the sensitivity realistic sounding/feeling. Most of the cymbal sounds are crap and some of the other sounds are just totally useless. Some of the kick sounds and percussion sounds are rather nice - and that's the pretty much the extent of the sounds I used on it; I had an Akai S-5000 sampler that I put my own sounds on and triggered with the DM5.
If I had to do it all again (and in the present day), I would have saved up for the DM Pro - a much better, albeit expensive, model.
elevate gives a pretty accurate assessment of the DM5. I've used the DM5 and D4 alot. I've also used the DMPro (but not as much as the other two Alesis modules).
The DM5 tries to add many more "processed sounds" vs. the dry sounds of the original D4. However, I think many of the sounds are "too processed", making them unuseable. I think the D4 is a better module than the DM5 (the D4 was almost a studio standard for a while). I prefer a drier drum sound, which I can adds effects to if needed.
The DMPro is a much better module - but it's much more expensive.
