I originally posted this at audioforums.com, but nobody was biting over there. Anyway:
Now that my collection of gear is starting to increase (thank you, student loans!), I'm starting to wonder about mic preamps. I have a Yamaha MX12/4 mixer and the M-Audio Omni Studio. I have the mixer in another room (hey, just like a real studio!), and I run cables back to the Omni box to record on my PC, which is in my bedroom. It's been working great so far. My question concerns the quality of the preamps in the Omni box--I assume they're better to some degree than the preamps in my mixer, but how much? And how much better would a quality stand-alone unit be (just for recording vocals and stuff like that)? I just got a CAD M-37, and I'd like to be able to use it to its fullest.
