how does Kanye West do it?

i am an aspiring producer and i posted a while ago about a vocal extractor. i now know there is no such thing. remover yes, but not extractor. anyways is there a certain type of processing that producers like him use to get just the vocals, or do they have the original masters to use. i think the latter, but i just want to know if i can do it. thanks.
 
They have the original masters.

It is sometimes possible to split the track into two seperate halves. Take one side and flip the phase and any sounds that are panned down the middle will cancel each other out. How well this works depends on whether or not there are any effects applied to vocals or backing parts that occur outside the 0 pan position.

right Qwerty, but that technique will remove the lead vocal, which is the exact opposite of what Rock Star wants to do.

you either, have the master, or you have the accapella version of the song on 12" wax, or you EQ the shit out of the non-vocal frequencies so that the surrounding music is way lower than the beat you are putting over it.

i used the latter technique when I wanted to lift a sample of Bono saying "slapping them down" from bullet the blue sky. the song sucked, but the sample worked.
 
does anyone know where i can get the acapalla versions, like a site or store where i can buy them, if there is such a thing.

Ooh yeah -- oops, left out a bit!

- Split the original into Left and Right channels
- Flip the phase on one channel
- Bounce that to a stereo track
- Import the original into a stereo file
- Flip the phase on one channel

That should be the "centre only" stuff.
