It seems that all my best ideas float into my head while I’m away from my guitar or keyboard. Of course, they vanish as soon as I get an opportunity to record them.

Does anyone have any methods for ‘Getting in The Zone’?
I find that lack of sleep and/or a hang-over improve my compositions.

Make like a journalist and use a hand taperecorder.

some weeks ago I started a thread "How do you write your songs" which received a lot of replies. If you look at the older threads (which are not on the actual board anymore) you should find it there!

but some methods I use: drum computer, change instruments (even if you can't play it very well), I also limit my note range sometimes to just 3 or 4 (may sound stupid, but I craft strong but simple melodies this way)

I also wrote some oy my newer songs a capella (I had to get used to it first, but now it's kind of practical as I am not dependent on my guitar and can write everywhere, and usually the best ideas come when I don't sit in my room trying to write!)

nevertheless I usually start with a good title, and if the title is good, the song is often finished in just some minutes...

Percieve songwriting as something you want to do. Don't let anything prohibit you from doing just that. Avail yourself to any and all resources at your disposal to accomplish your goal. Believe in yourself and stay focused.
Make a list of your strong and weak points with regard to composition and strive to improve upon your weaknesses. Music has always been easier for me to write than lyrics, so it is the lyrical aspect I put more work into.
