using a tuner to raise the pitch of each string a 1/2 step is not a hard task. Using a chromatic tuner, with the open string tunings of B E A D G, raise the pitch to C F A# D# G#. I record with a guitar player occasionaly that detunes everything a 1/2 step to make it fatter.
You do need to realize that 4 or 5 strings tightened by the individual machine heads equates to a single steel cable as big as your finger being tightened by a winch, and it does have enough winching effect to pick up a motorcycle. So like sjjohnston was saying'"go to a lighter gauge string"... if this is gonna be a regular type deal, or all kinds of exciting events could take place. Like making the neck look like a banana, pulling the bridge off, getting cut by a flying steel cable, or the laminate popping loose in the neck.
