i know it'd probably been done before and it seems simple but what dimensions would i need and what are the hole spacings on the rack rail so i can buy the right ones

 Rack rails come predrilled/spaced so thats no problem, You can get rackrails from AMS, musefriend, Fullcompass etc.
You can use wood, plywood to build the box so that the holes on the rail will be wide enough apart to hold gear; measure one of your rackmounts items to determine this. Also the box/frame must be square so that when you mount rails, both will have their holes even height so that racked items will be level.

i measured my power amp which takes up 2 spaces and the distance between holes is 3 inches so i figure i'll be looking for hole that are 1 1/2 inches apart right? i read somewhere that racks have wierd spacing on them that isnt always 1 1/2 inches aprt in hole spacing

:D correct, Each rack space is 1 7/8" tall, So your amp height is 3 3/4" tall with the hole spacing as you say, I would buy the predrilled rack rails though.

If you are going to make your own rails, put the angle iron face to face, clamp them together, center punch your holes, drill them and tap them.

this will help keep the holes in alignment.

I would also suggest you buy pre-drilled rack rails. They are really quite cheap and will save you a lot of time, unless you have the right tools at your disposal.

I have seen some homemade racks with wooden rack rails, so maybe that is what you are thinking of doing. I do think the steel rack rails are a better way to go.

Remember to leave 1/8"-1/4" clearance above and below each rack rail, and to set them back from the front of the unit a bit. Anywhere from 1/4" to 1/2" is good.

I've made most of my studio furniture myself, and once you get the hang of it, it's really quite easy although time-consuming. The advantage is that you can design racks to perfectly fit your space and your work flow requirements.

Go here to see a couple picture of the racks I've made myself:

The two 24 space racks I bought, but the mixer stand and keyboard console I built myself.

Great site, Alby.

It isn't often I get to see someone doing what they dreamed of as a child, and being successful at it to boot.

Maybe someday I'll have a setup like yours, when I'm doing steady work as an announcer. Good job.
