I am hooking up a DAW studio and I want to know what is the best set-up. I have my Alesis M1 active monitors plugged directly into my output of my SB live card. I have my Begringer Eurorack 20 channel mixer is going to my SB live in for all my rackmount synths.

I dont think this is the best way. I can't hookup my AKG headphones to the soundcard because it has been taken by the Alesis monitors.

Should I hookup the computer to the mixer?

I want to keep it simple because my wife uses the computer and I want her to be able to hear sound on the computer without alot of switches to flip.

Thanks,

tcdave

PS - If you have any links that are a good resource for home studio setups, leave them on this thread.

you did try running the line out from the SB into the mixer then use recording/monitoring out on the mixer for the M1s ? your mixer has a headphone out , i hope...if not, others do.

J has it right. Route the output from your sound card back to two channels on your mixer. Route the control room out from your mixer to your powered monitors. Make sure while you are recording to mute the input from the sound card (either in software or by just switching off those channels) otherwise you may wind up with a feedback loop.

I'd say, use a separate (small) mixer for monitoring.

The output of my sblive and one of the outputs of my VC6Q preamp (in your case that would mean your 20 channel eurorack) go to a Behringer MX602A mixer. The other output of my VC6Q is hooked up to the input of the sblive. I plug a set of headphones in the mixer.

This way I can record vocals (or bass or whatever), hearing both myself and the prerecorded tracks from the sblive through the headphones without any of those tracks bleeding to the voicetrack.

He doesnt need another mixer. Just do what the other guys suggested. But you will probably have to set it for your wife when you are done recording.

So to recap-
Run the SB Out to your Mixer on the line level channels. There is probably a stereo channel that works well for monitoring.

Run the Mixer out to your speakers

You may still have the headphone out on the SB free or you can use the headphone jack on the mixer.

Thanks, I'll need to read up on the mixer....

Thanks, and keep those suggestions coming!!!

I will get back to you in a couple of days after reading the manual for the mixer. There are some things on it that I have no idea what it is.
